This study focuses on the fundamental changes which took place in consumer co-operatives over the course of 1948–1953 as the result of “Victorious February” 1948. It looks at the original state of co-operatives during the First Republic and analyses how this changed during the war, the Third Republic and in particular following February 1948. It assesses the consequences these changes brought for co-operatives. Last but not least, it also looks at the role which KSČ expert in the field, Internal Trade Minister and head of the Central Co-operatives Council, Antonín Zmrhal, played in the process of “Gleichschaltungification” of consumer co-operatives. The study posits the core question of what part of the analysed changes (if any) would be possible without the February coup and establishment of the communist dictatorship.

The study analyzes selected aspects of cooperative development in Bohemian lands between the 1850s and World War One. Based on methods of modern economic and social history, the paper focuses on four important topics: 1. It deals with the four key laws that regulated the cooperatives and concludes that they created a solid basis for cooperative development. 2. It analyzes the development of cooperatives between the late 1840s and late 1880s, pointing out the different development of credit and consumer cooperatives during this period which was primarily caused by very different social groups being members of these two types of cooperatives. 3. It analyses the rapid growth of cooperatives since the 1890s, during which thousands of cooperatives and dozens of new cooperative types emerged. The study proves that the most important reason for such explosive growth was the general modernization as a part of the industrial revolution. 4. It compares the statistics of the 1890s and 1910 and demonstrates that cooperatives became a respected and strong part of the society and economy.

The paper draws attention to several aspects of the XIXth World Economic History Congress (WEHC) that took part in Paris in August 2022. First, it analyzes the plenary session by Bruce Campbell about environmental history. Followingly, three parallel sessions are analyzed that were focused on the research of living standards. Based on this analysis, the paper deduces some vital points that could be more addressed by Czech economic historiography to complement (however, absolutely not to replace!) the current research. First, there should be more interdisciplinary research, including cooperation with natural and exact sciences. Second, much more quantitative research is needed in Czech historiography, e.g. by using database analyses or econometry.
