The traditional concept of news journalism in Germany focused on the strict separation between “objective” and “subjective” text patterns. Since the late sixties, this traditional concept began to slowly disappear. The article thus tries to examine the patterns on “Süddeutsche Zeitung’s” “Meinungsseite” (editorial page). The result is that in this paper no difference between “commenting editorials” and “explaining editorials” can be found today. The interpretation focuses on the fact that explaining segments nowadays are an integrated part of traditional “objective” articles. Thus, there is no need for “explaining editorials” anymore. In spite of the fact that there still is, out of historical reasons, a section of “explaining editorials”, all editorials of today’s “Süddeutsche Zeitung” are commenting.

My contribution aims to discuss aspects of comparative, interculturally focussed communication and media sciences. It is evident that the aspect of interculturality becomes increasingly important in our globalised world. The precursor are the media. Thus communication and media sciences ought to focus on intercultural topics as virulent areas of research. My contribution aims to give exemplar for such kinds of research and especially discusses the specific features of communication and media sciences, respectively.

This article tries to deliver an interpretation of Platon’s Phaidros text passage in regard of McLuhan’s distinction between ‘cool’ and ‘hot’ media, thus contributing to render more precisely Platon’s theoretical analysis and to explain why Platon’s assumption is regularily quoted but nevertheless had largely no results and effects.

The study aims to research the cognitive processing of text types. Test persons were given poem verse lines – with the prescription that a poem was to be read, or a prose text, respectively. The processing time was determined by this preliminary information. Obviously this is an indicator that poems and prose are differently processed.

In November 2013, UK Prime Minister David Cameron suggested migration of Bulgarian and Romanian citizens to be better controlled, and the UK to better regulate her welfare spending in regard of newly arrived immigrants. His suggestions targeted core European values, and attacked citizens of fellow European partner states. Question was how this was valued in editorial comments from newspapers of four European countries: Germany, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, and Greece. In regard of the content, we found that all editorial comments focused different aspects, and most (except the Luxembourg one) were critical. In regard of explicity, we assume cultural differences, especially with the German text.

Komentarze pochodzą z czterech państw: Luksemburga, Niemiec, Bułgarii i Grecji. Analiza pragmatyczna wybranych komentarzy wskazuje na różnice w zachowaniach językowych i  poziom krytyki (najmniej krytyczny Luksemburg) wobec ważnego i aktualnego zjawiska społeczno-europejskiego.
