The article presents results of the study carried out in Mońki, which is a town characterized by high intensity of economic emigration. The study was conducted in 2016, during the so-called the migration crisis, i.e. the increased influx of immigrants and refugees to the countries of the European Union. Although the wave of this influx did not reach Poland, but the migration crisis has become an important social issue, especially in the mass media. Our survey shows how being a member of an emigrant sending community affects the attitude towards receiving immigrants and refugees.
The paper is based on an analysis of the people addresses for the World Days of the Migrant of the years 1989-2000. In the light of John Paul II's teaching the situation of migrants has a lot in common with the situation of the Church, of the “people on the move”. The pope devotes much attention to the processes of integration between migrants, representing various religions, with the recipient societies. Adherence to a religious community helps migrants in preserving their own identity, but the course of integration processes depends also on the dominating religion in the recipient societies. A separate question is the issue of social stratification and legal aspects of migration. The pope points to numerous manifestations of disproportion among immigrants in the social, economic, and legal dimensions, demanding at the same time that the causes of this situations be done away with. The situation of the family on he move and of the woman has become for John Paul II a topic of two separate addresses. In this context, one speaks about problems resulting from social uprootedness and the ways how to overcome it. The final part of the paper deals with causes and consequences of migration, including a moral evaluation of this phenomenon: a negative evaluation of migration entails illegal emigration. The pope is positive about the migration of young people connected with their education, and the migration of people as regards the “uniting of families”.
The paper presents some features of contemporary international migration from Podlaskie voivodeship on the basis of on statistical data and biographical materials of labour emigrants from that region. The classification of the Central Statistical Office focuses on two main forms of emigration: permanent migration and temporary migration. Biographical materials suggest that integration processes depend on the form of migration. Permanent migration facilitates integration with host society. After the EU accession temporary migration from Poland, as well as from Podlaskie voivodeship, has increased considerably. Main migration directions have changed: emigration to USA has decreased while the number of trips to European countries has increased. Migration stories (both biographies and autobiographies) show the development of migration culture and transnational life style. Increasing number of Polish temporary migrants fosters the creation of new Polish colonies with specific characteristics. This phenomenon is discussed in the framework of the socialization theory of Berger and Luckmann.
The topic of the article is the analysis of the programs of the National Sociological Congresses in the years 1990–2022 in terms of the presence of migration issues. The programs of 11 congresses were analysed. After Poland’s accession to the EU in 2004, a strong increase in interest in international migration is becoming more and more visible. However, as time passes and subsequent congresses take place, the subject of migration changes from issues related to the outflow of people from Poland to issues related to the influx of foreigners into Poland.
