Didactic translations and translation projects are one of the ways of familiarising students simultaneously with a foreign language and culture, allowing them to develop language competences and learn about cultural similarities and differences. The aim of this article is to present a way of acquainting students with elements of foreign culture through translation, show the benefits of working with translation for language learning and present difficulties related to the translation of cultural elements and solutions used by translators. Teaching language and culture through translation has many advantages. First of all, working with the original text gives students access to the elements of the source culture in a specific communication context. Moreover, the translation assumes an in-depth understanding of the original, including intercultural allusions and intertextual references. The effort put into the translation process by the students makes them better memorize foreign elements and structures.
This paper presents the challenges encountered in the translation of Opowiadania przykładne, by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. The article analyzes the way cultural allusions and intertextual references are translated, whilst striving to respect the original style. The comparison of the original and the translation shows that separating the characteristic features of the original and choosing a specific initial norm helps in determining the priorities, strategies and techniques that the translator intends to follow. Nevertheless, the need to preserve the poetic style of the original often influences the translator's decisions.

Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia problemy związane z przekładem Contos exemplares Sophii de Mello Breyner Andresen. Bada w jaki sposób przekład łączy ukazywanie aluzji kulturowych i nawiązań intertektusalnych z potrzebą zachowania stylu oryginału. Porównanie oryginału i przekładu, połączone z wyjaśnieniem przebiegu procesu decyzyjnego tłumacza wskazuje, że określenie cech charakterystycznych dla oryginału i obranie określonej normy początkowej pomaga w ustaleniu priorytetów, jakimi tłumacz będzie się kierował. Niemniej jednak w praktyce często konieczność zachowania poetyckiego stylu oryginału wpływa na techniki stosowane przez tłumacza.
Postcolonial African literatures written in Portuguese build their identity by modifying existing linguistic and literary norms. One of its manifestations is including in writings elements of traditional orality. The orality becomes an indicator of identity, it differentiates literatures of colonies and ex-colonies from the one written in the metropolis, it allows to preserve and transmit popular wisdom and references to traditional forms. Although oral elements are an important part of the original, as they create a separate literary style and genre, they are often neutralized in translation. This unfavourable tendency may be the result of an unawareness regarding the importance of orality, lack of sensitivity and an attempt to adjust the translated text to the norms of the target literature. This work aims to gather and analyse different indicators of orality in African literatures written in Portuguese, to examine if and how they are transmitted in Polish translations. To do so, we follow the division of manifestations of orality elaborated by Walter Ong. The awareness of the role played by orality in the analysed texts and sensitivity to its indicators in the texts will allow translators to more consciously choose the strategies and techniques which enable them to show the original’s diversity to target recipients.
