The Young Generation of Poles and the System of the Time of Transformation in Social Reportages Printed by “Gazeta Wyborcza”

This article is focused on the way social facts are extracted and processed by authors of the articles of “Gazeta Wyborcza” and their interpretation of the social processes that took place during the political transformation. The method of sociography is described with reference to the complex geopolitical and socio-economic situation of Poland. The influence of post-transformational government system on citizens’ individual lives and collective existence of young generation of Poles is analyzed. I based my descriptions and assessments of the transformational system on original texts published by “Gazeta Wyborcza” in the period of 1992-2004. Their analysis allowed me to put forward research hypotheses and then, after verification, to come up with a conclusion. The choice of reportages was based on the presence and domination of a youth character placed by authors in the heart of transformational changes. Texts (except for reportages of Mariusz Szczygieł, who actually does not write about young people) present dilemmas and problems of young Poles, located in the melting pot of transformational changes that have been still taking place. I focus a lot on youth subcultures, which are considered an initial stage of youth rebellion and source of collective actions undertaken by young characters. Basing this article on source materials (written reportages - in press) increases its attractiveness and cognitive values. The aim of this article is to encourage potential readers – students, representatives of other social groups as well as qualified researchers – to consult the cited texts.

W artykule przyjrzę się wydobywaniu i przetwarzaniu faktów społecznych przez autorów Gazety oraz ich interpretacji procesów społecznych, zachodzących w czasie transformacji ustrojowej. Zobrazuję metody swoistej socjografii, lokując jej przedmiot w złożonej w tamtych czasach sytuacji geopolitycznej i społeczno-gospodarczej Polski. Zastanowię się nad skutkami oddziaływania poprzełomowego systemu państwa na życie jednostkowe obywateli i zbiorową egzystencję pokolenia młodych Polaków. W opisie i ocenie transformacyjnego systemu wykorzystam oryginalne teksty zamieszczone na łamach „Gazety Wyborczej” w okresie 1992-2004. Ich analiza pozwoli mi na postawienie hipotez badawczych, a następnie – po ich zweryfikowaniu – na wysnucie odpowiednich wniosków. Wybór reportaży podyktowany jest dominacją w tekstach bohatera młodzieżowego, którego autorzy sytuują w centrum transformacyjnych przemian. Zapisy (z wyjątkiem reportaży Mariusza Szczygła, który o młodzieży w zasadzie nie pisze) wydatnie ukazują rozterki i dylematy młodych Polaków, ulokowanych w tyglu przeobrażeń systemowych, które trwają do dziś. W artykule sporo uwagi poświęcę subkulturom młodzieżowym, traktowanym tu jako zaczyn młodzieńczego buntu i zarzewie działań wspólnotowych młodych bohaterów. Oparcie się na materiale źródłowym (reportażu pisanym – prasowym) zwiększyć ma atrakcyjność odbiorczą niniejszego szkicu i poszerzyć jego walory poznawcze. Celem artykułu jest zachęcenie potencjalnych czytelników – zarówno uczniów szkolnych i przedstawicieli innych grup społecznych, jak i wykwalifikowanych badaczy tematu – do sięgnięcia po cytowane pozycje.

The aim of this article, entitled „The attitude of young Poles towards values after political transformation”, is to describe the attitude of a part of young generation towards moral categories after the political transformation of 1989. The author discusses selected stories printed in „Gazeta Wyborcza” describing individual heroes who create an image of a collective protagonist and focuses on ethics and the analysis of some specific aspects of their lives. Three types of contexts (psychological, social and cultural) were used to find universal mean-ings that result from the interpretation of individual experiences. The genre of analysed text is a story with a social meaning that presents a part of the young, post-transformation generation. These stories fit the metacultural discourse of the article, especially that related to existential and axiological crisis in the post-transformation period.

Celem artykułu jest próba scharakteryzowania stosunku do kate-gorii moralnych części młodego pokolenia Polaków po przełomie ustrojowym 1989 r. Autorka omawia wybrane reportaże „Gazety Wyborczej”, portretując bo-haterów indywidualnych, tworzących obraz bohatera zbiorowego, pod kątem ety-ki, i analizując określone aspekty ich życia osobniczego. W znalezieniu uniwersal-nych sensów, na które przekłada opisy jednostkowych doświadczeń, pomaga jej uwzględnienie trzech kontekstów: psychologicznego, społecznego i kulturowego.
