This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book Динамика и иновации в лексикалната система на българския език, published in 2019 in Plovdiv. The book consists of nine parts, each dealing with a different type of linguistic processes (archaisation, terminologisation and determinologisation, lexicalisation, univerbation, neologisation, internationalisation) occurring in the lexical system of contemporary Bulgarian. Linguistic changes in the lexical sphere are presented in the context of dynamic changes in the methods of communication, determined by non-linguistic reality. The monograph deals with new vocabulary, from the end of the 20th century to the present day. It contains a synthetic review of certain positions within the scope of the discussed linguistic processes. An effort was also made to organise the terminology used in Bulgarian linguistic studies. The advantage of the monograph resides in the original propositions for the interpretation of individual phenomena and the author’s own propositions for definitions. What makes the publication particularly interesting is the presentation of an experimental study in the field of examining language competence and language memory of those Bulgarian language users who represent the generation of today’s students.

The article focuses on the selected cognitive aspects of the interpretation of meaning of Polish and Bulgarian compounds with the eco-component in the journalistic discourse. According to the assumptions suggested by J. Bartmiński and S. Niebrzegowska-Bartmińska, I define discourse as „a processual and contextual conceptualization of a «communication event» whose objective «created» conceptualization is text”. I provide the composites present in Polish and Bulgarian journalistic discourse with a critical eco-linguistic comment. The analysis made on texts being the  objective conceptualization  of  the  journalistic  discourse  proves  semantic  under-specification of the eco-component. In many structures, this component loses the meaning content in the sense of denotation, while it carries a certain axiological judgment, becoming a kind of emotive operator that makes it easier to manipulate the meaning.

This paper discusses the problem of Bulgarian compound nouns with the component арт-. I would like to draw your attention to several significant features of the compound words in question. It mainly concerns the feature of brevity, the creation of new structures on the basis of a simple model based on analogy as well as the fact that the feature of formal transparency of compounds is accompanied by a large degree of semantic density. At the level of semantic analysis I used the text linguistic approach and emphasized the usefulness of cognitive methods of interpreting the meaning of the discussed type of words. I put an accent on the semantic blur of derivatives used in the language of the mass media out of context.

This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book Кой, кога, къде в простарнното житие на св. Константин-Кирил (Vita Constantini: who, when, where) by Maya Ivanova and Tsvetomira Danova, published in 2021 in Sofia. The book consists of two main parts. The first and most extensive part is a kind of lexicon with 177 entries: personal name and by-names of actual historical figures; biblical and mythological characters; names of ethnonyms, tribes and languages; geographic names (including names of sacred objects), difficult and archaic words. Part II contains the text of the Vita. The book is a handbook intended for a wide groupof lay audiences, including Bulgarian Studies scholars abroad. This handbook is a coherent and well-thought-out entity. The study combines the condition of scientific credibility with the feature of accessibility. There is a need for similar teaching aids in the didactic process of students of Slavic studies.

The purpose of this article is to present the language picture of the woman on the basis of the lyrics of songs classified as a genre known as chalga. The image reconstructed in this manner seems to be particularly interesting from the perspective of the figurative meaning of the lexeme chalga in the Bulgarian language. It then appears as a type of exemplar of anticulture, in which the representation of women’s beauty and the model of male-female relations are displayed in an extremely evocative and archetypal way.

Cognitive interpretation of newest compounds with a bound component repetitive in a series of words (on the examples from Polish and Bulgarian languages)In this article I have made an attempt to show selected cognitive aspects of newest compounds with a bound component repetitive in a series of words, on the example of nearly a dozen expressions from Polish and Bulgarian languages. I have reflected on a problem whether all compounds of such type are entitled to a status of a language unit and I have stated that only few compound structures with a high degree of establishment in the consciousness of language users have such status. I have also pointed out the usefulness of cognitive methods of interpretation of meaning of a word type under discussion. I think an approach especially worth using is encyclopedic semantics, taking into consideration all domains of knowledge and experience, as well as presentation of the conceptualizer’s perspective, allowing, among others, to interpret the profiled opinion, sometimes included in the very formation of a word, or otherwise, updating itself in a specific context.

Intracommunitary compositas – compounds with евро- particle in BulgarianFrom the observation of a contemporary Bulgarian word formation system results that the number of compounds which significant part is developed basing on new productive models is constantly increasing. Therefore the subject of this article constitute Bulgarian compounds with a disintegrated particle евро- that are thematically connected with the process of European Integration. I begin the analysis from the description of compositas’ word formation construction. Then I go to semantic dissertation (I make an attempt to classify all mentioned structures thematically and I create a dictionary definition of the евро- particle) and on to stylistic ones (I pay special attention to the functioning of the discussed units both in a text, and in a lexical system).

W artykule podjęto próbę sformułowania kognitywnej definicji znaczeniowej konceptu, do którego dają dostęp polskie compositum koronaturystyka oraz bułgarski wyraz ковидтуризъм. Wyniki badań opierają się na danych eksperymentalnych. Eksperyment został przeprowadzony zgodnie z głównymi założeniami metodologicznymi lubelskiej etnolingwistyki kognitywnej na 50 studentach polskich i 50 studentach bułgarskich. Podstawowe cechy stabilizujące konceptu koronaturystyka/ковидтуризъм są takie same dla obu języków. Zarówno polscy, jak i bułgarscy respondenci przypisują koronaturystyce fizykalną cechę temporalności, definiując ją jako aktywność lub działalność turystyczną mającą miejsce w trakcie trwania pandemii. W obrazie koronaturystyki w obu językach dominują także cecha zachowawczości i cecha ryzyka – uprawianie turystyki z uwzględnieniem pandemicznych obostrzeń vs. uprawianie turystyki mimo istniejących restrykcji. Wskaźnik stereotypizacji konceptu jest bardzo wysoki dla obu języków – 67,3% dla języka polskiego; 57,69% dla języka bułgarskiego.

The article attempts to formulate a cognitive definition of the meaning of the concept of the Polish compositum koronaturystyka and the Bulgarian word ковидтуризъм. The research results are based on survey data collected from 50 Polish and 50 Bulgarian students in accordance with the main methodological assumptions of the Lublin cognitive ethnolinguistics school. The basic stabilizing features of the koronaturystyka/ковидтуризъм concept are the same for both languages. Polish and Bulgarian respondents attribute the physical feature of temporality to koronaturystyka/ковидтуризъм, defining it as tourist activity taking place during a pandemic. The conservatism and risk traits are also dominant in the picture of koronaturystyka/ковидтуризъм in both languages: tourism that takes pandemic restrictions into account vs. tourism despite these restrictions. The extent to which the concept is stereotyped is very high for both languages: 67.3% in Polish; 57.69% in Bulgarian.
