The article examines the common points in the creative principles of A. P. Chekhov and F. M. Reshetnikov, a writer belonging to the raznochintsy of the 1860's. The juxtaposition is carried out on the level of their artistic philosophy, narratology and concept of time. Through this emerges the existential character of Reshetnikov's works, allowing to place him in the conext of 20th century literature and to bring him together with Chekhov.
