This article discusses eco-theology as one of the new research areas in Polish theology in order to assess its scope and anticipate future developments. The first part of the article provides an overview of the history of eco-theology. The second part examines its biblical core. Lastly, the third part focuses on theological definitions of eco-theology, including the author’s own account. The conclusion identifies shortcomings and opportunities for further development.

W artykule zaprezentowana została ekoteologia jako jeden ze stosunkowo nowych obszarów badawczych w polskiej teologii. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie zakresu prowadzonych badań oraz dalszych możliwości ich rozwoju. W pierwszej części przedstawiono historię rozwoju dyscypliny. Druga część zawiera biblijne podstawy wskazane przez ekoteologów. W trzeciej części zaprezentowane zostały wypracowane definicje dyscypliny, w tym również zaproponowano nowe, autorskie jej określenie. W zakończeniu wskazano luki w omawianym obszarze badawczym oraz możliwości ich zapełnienia.

The article presents the Animal Theology as a new field of research in the Polish theological studies. The aim of the paper is to indicate the scope of research and its further possibilities.The first part accounts for the reception of Andrew Linzey’s ‘Theology of Animals’ in the Polish scientific literature. The second part is an attempt to systematise the term and the area of research and proposed definitions, including the author’s one. The third part presents the juxtaposition with ecotheology taking into account the common and typical elements of each (sub)discipline. The article concludes by pointing out the shortcomings of this new research field and possibilities for further advancements.

W artykule zaprezentowana została teologia zwierząt jako nowe pole badawcze w polskiej teologii. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie zakresu prowadzonych badań oraz dalszych możliwości rozwoju. W pierwszej części badacz przedstawił recepcję Teologii zwierząt Andrew Linzeya w polskiej literaturze naukowej. Druga część zawiera próbę usystematyzowania nazwy i obszaru badań. Wskazane zostały zaproponowane definicje, w tym autorska. W trzeciej części zaprezentowane zostało zestawienie z ekoteologią oraz wskazane zostały elementy wspólne oraz typowe dla każdej z (sub)dyscyplin. W zakończeniu wskazano braki na tym polu badawczym oraz możliwości dalszego rozwoju.

The purpose of the research was to identify the possibility of forming pro-animal and pro-ecological attitudes in Christians through the zootheological and ecotheological works of Tatiana Goricheva. The method of analysis and criticism of the literature was used, which supports the use of knowledge that has been analyzed, evaluated and synthesized through this method. The analyzed texts were both interviews with Tatiana Goricheva and her publications. The possibility of forming affirmative attitudes toward the natural world, including animals, based on traditional Christian values is demonstrated. Changing attitudes to friendly towards ecological and more pro-animal positions does not require changing one’s faith or ceasing to practice it or abandoning part of the tradition. Instead, it requires at least a partial commitment on the part of believers and the work of clergy and others teaching in communities.
