The aim of the presented analysis was to update the knowledge on the topic of mortality among senior citizens in Poland. The following article presents a compilation of data concerning mortality rate in relation to various age groups, divided by location and by causes of death. The authors have managed to confirm that the spatial distribution of mortality in relation to various age groups changes in accordance with the specificity of a particular region in respect of the general mortality trend. Higher mortality among younger age groups was noticed in regions with lower life expectancy, whereas, locations with a larger proportion of the old were characterised by the highest values only among senior citizens. It was also proved that together with the transition from one age group to another, the causes of death differ; firstly, cancer dominates, while in the later age deaths are usually caused by the failure of the circulatory system. Moreover, a territorial distribution was confirmed as northern Poland is characterised by higher mortality caused by tumours, while in southern Poland circulatory problems predominate. There are also some regions were those tendencies vary from relatively high to rather low values.

This article deals with the relationships between seniors’ lifestyles and their health and quality of life with respect to the determinants and consequences of aging. As found, considering the complex and dynamically changing set of factors determining individuals’ lifestyles the elderly “withdraw from life” too early and too far. This worrying finding brings into attention active recreation as an approach allowing people to maintain physical fitness, mental health and social activity, and thus being capable of postponing the most severe effects of aging. Before presenting the potential of active tourism as a useful instrument of active recreation, the social consequences of aging and the special character of „seniors” as a social group are discussed in terms of what enables and what restricts the use of free time. This provides a background for showing the functions of tourism as an activity having a beneficial effect not only on physical and mental health, but also on the social interaction of elderly people. Active recreation effectively compensates for losses caused by economic inactivity and withdrawal from certain social roles by building various social relations (including intergenerational) and breaking isolation, as well as by initiating a learning process based on new experiences and contacts, and developing interests and skills that strengthen the feeling of independence, self-confidence and self-esteem. Active tourism, adjusted to the needs and capabilities of elderly people, may make a measurable contribution to better quality of their lives.

Historical parks and palace and park complexes deserve special protection for their potential and as the embodiment of national heritage. Most of them are impressive estates that bear witness to their times and reflect the dreams and aspirations of their owners. However, because of the entangled history of post-socialist countries including Poland much of the cultural heritage they represent has been irreversibly destroyed. The aim of the study was to assess the concept of culture-led regeneration as applied to palace and park complexes situated in rural areas at risk of marginalisation in a post-socialist country, Poland, using the case of Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. Its findings show that culture-led regeneration is a valuable instrument for protecting historical palace and park estates, which saves the areas from further devastation and boosts local development.
