This paper assesses the continuing debate about the role of the State in governance. Although the State has been “brought back in” numerous times, there are continuing changes in the State and in its relationships with society that are important for understanding how contemporary governance functions. Further, there is no single model of the contemporary State but substantial variety, again with implications for governing.
