Middle is regarded as a cross-linguistic phenomenon, but the “middles” in different languages fairly vary, especially in their morphology and syntax. More and more scholars, therefore, consider that the essence of the middle as a universal feature consists in its semantics. Accordingly, the semantic research of the middle has been making remarkable progress, but behind this trend, effects deriving from the fact that the middle is a voice phenomenon do not seem to be sufficiently clarified. In the present article, after a brief summary of the previous research, we will be trying to reexamine the middle as a voice phenomenon.

Das Medium gilt zwar als übereinzelsprachliches Phänomen, aber mediale Erscheinungen in Einzelsprachen unterscheiden sich vor allem in der Formenseite viel voneinander. Daher sieht man immer mehr das Wesen des Medium in seiner Semantik. Damit entwickelt sich die semantische Forschung des Mediums, diese Richtung lässt insofern etwas zu wünschen übrig, als diathetische Eigenschaften des Mediums immer noch nicht genug erklärt sind. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird nach der Zusammenfassung der Forschungen erneut das Medium als Diathese probeweise untersucht.
