The article presents an overview of the initiatives undertaken to preserve the industrial and mining heritage of the city of Wałbrzych. First, the article provides an outline of actions undertaken for the documentation and research of the local industrial heritage resources. It presents the conceptual framework for the functioning of the Centre for Historic and Contemporary Mining Technology (Ośrodek Dawnej i Nowej Techniki Górniczej) as well as for the founding of a Museum of Industry and Technology. The author discusses actions necessary for the revitalization and the adaptation of the former “Julia” mine for cultural purposes as a part of the greater project for the establishment of a cultural complex of Old Mine (Stara Kopalnia). The article highlights that the functions of such institutions are much broader than just the commemoration of the mining and industrial history of the city, and should entail supporting and fostering its cultural development as well. The author concludes with the observation that the preservation of the local heritage bears the same objectives as the preservation of the city’s industrial heritage from the 1990’s.
