The article presents the late period of Ricoeur's hermeneutics where the category of discourse, after a series of transpositions, becomes an important point of reference. These transpositions can be understood as subsequent complements: structural semiotics is complemented by semantics of clause, the communication act (event) is complemented by meaning (which is based upon contextual reference), elusiveness of speech by textual universality and autonomy, the non-lingual nature of the symbol by lingual metaphor, and finally, clarification by understanding. The article also points out a number of difficulties with understanding Ricoeur's categories of presupposition, reality, the subject, play, and truth.
