The article deals with the problems of multifunctionality of farms. Skilful combination of production functions with social, cultural and environmental functions leads to the development of farms expressed not only in the income and personal categories but also in the categories of common good. The development of multifunctional character of farms is based on the use of resources linked to agricultural and rural environment (human and social capital included) and is expressed through the launching of new types of agricultural and non-agricultural activities which, however, are linked to the operation of farms.

The article deals with the phenomenon of formation of social enterprises in Poland within the framework of the EU's 'EQUAL' initiative. The authoress presents two examples of such initiatives launched in rural areas. She also makes an attempt at critically assessing 'EQUAL' projects from the point of view of their ability to ensure lasting development at the local level.

The paper present the results of an analysis (based on the data provided by the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture) conducted to determine the geographical structure of applications filed within the implementation of the SAPARD programme in Poland. The analysis was carried out in accordance with the criterion of the SAPARD's four Actions programmes and at two levels of territorial division: NUTS II (voivodeships) and NUTS III (sub-regions).

The article outlines the activity of the European Academy for Sustainable Rural Development, its concepts, its objectives and principles. The authoresses concentrate their attention chiefly on the presentation of one sphere of the Academy's activity - the organization of Summer Academies, which they do on the example of the Fourth Edition of the Summer Academy (June 2005, Ilmajoki, Finland) that they have themselves attended.Special emphasis has been laid on the teaching methodology applied during the Summer Academy courses.

The article presents the results of field research concerning the implementation of the Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (SAPARD) in Poland. Surveys covering farmers-applicants for assistance available under the programme were conducted in two parts of Mazowieckie voivodeship: in its eastern part (former Bialystok voivodeship) and in the area around Warsaw. The aim of the surveys was to collect the opinions of farmers about the programme at different stages of its implementation.

The phenomenon and the notion of social capital are not new, but they are being approached and discussed in the context of new concepts of sustainable development of rural areas. The authoressess present the main conclusions and observations from an international Summer Academy devoted to the issue of social capital of rural areas that was organized in Finland . For more information about the organizer of workshops, about its forms and methodology see the previous abstract of the same authoresses' article.They also present, using the examples of Finish villages, the process and effects of the strengthening of the social capital of rural communities.
