This article introduces the reader to the theoretical results of systematic research into the future of Czech society, as developed and applied by the CESES working team since 2000. In the first part the paper identifies the main theoretical streams that offer explanations of developmental determinants in contemporary societies, in particular theories on the processes of modernisation and globalisation. The second part demonstrates how the pluralism of possible theoretical concepts, confronted by the need to address specific forecasting tasks within specific time frames, has been projected into a draft concept for a developmental model of Czech society and its modernisation in a global context.
