The purpose of this article is to describe a pilot project for the implementation of the gender mainstreaming strategy, so to include gender perspective in spatial issues, with particular emphasis on mobility, transport and social infrastructure on the example of Vienna‘s district Mariahilf. The aim of the author is to show the relevance, procedures and requirements to implement the strategy of gender mainstreaming using the method 5R + 1E, which is evaluation of the method 3R and 4R. This method disclosure of the differences in the position of women and men in the problem area, as well as the analysis of these differences in the context of the socio-cultural situation. The results are related to the situation of Polish spatial policy at local and regional level, in which there is a lack of integration of the gender perspective into local and regional development strategies. A key finding from the study is that urban and spatial planning will be balanced when they take into account the needs of men and women for determining the function of urban spaces, the location of individual objects of urban infrastructure and transport links between them.

Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy znaczenia procesu starzenie się społeczeństwa dla zrównoważonego rozwoju miast europejskich. Starzenie się społeczeństwa jest kluczowym elementem obecnych przeobrażeń cywilizacyjnych, jest zagrożeniem a zarazem wyzwaniem dla zrównoważonych miast XXI wieku. Ze względu na dramatycznie postępujące zmiany demograficzne zasadne jest stwierdzenie, że miasta powinny dostosować się do zaspokojenia potrzeb współczesnych i przyszłych pokoleń, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zrównoważonego rozwoju miast. Dla lokalnych władz problematyka ta powinna stanowić ważny element polityki miejskiej. W artykule przedstawiono przykład projektu zainicjowanego w 2002 r. w Wielkiej Brytanii, który mógłby stanowić inspirację dla władz lokalnych i samorządowych.

This article is about the importance of the aging population for the sustainable development of European cities. The aging population is a key element of the current transformation of civilization, is a threat and a challenge for the twenty-first century sustainable cities. Given the dramatic demographic changes progressing, it is appropriate to say that cities should evolve to meet the present day and future generations, focusing on aspects of sustainable urban development. For this issue of the local authorities should be an important element of urban policy, the article presents an example of a project initiated in 2002 in the UK, which could provide inspiration for local authorities and government.

Miasta europejskie w XXI w. ze względu na starzenie się populacji staną przed koniecznością przystosowania się do zmieniających się potrzeb mieszkańców. Starzenie się ludności jest jednym z globalnych trendów, który dotyczy przede wszystkim miast w krajach rozwiniętych, w tym Polski. Niezależnie od udziału osób starszych w mieście a także tempa ich starzenia, miasta muszą podjąć działania służące odnowie. Autorka podejmuje próbę przedstawienia typologii miast ze względu na zmiany demograficzne. Za pomocą metody studium przypadku próbuje określić kierunki i koncepcje odnowy miast w zakresie zmian w strukturze funkcjonalno-przestrzennej poszczególnych typów obszarów miejskich.

European cities in the twenty-first century due to the ageing of the population will entail the need to adapt to the changing needs of residents in the context of an aging population. Population ageing is one of the global trends, which relates primarily to cities in developed countries, including Polish. Notwithstanding the participation of older people in the city, as well as the rate of aging, the city must take action for their renewal. This article attempts to present a typology of cities due to demographic changes. Using the case study method attempts to determine the directions of and concepts of urbanrenewal in the changes in the functional and spatialstructure of different types of urban areas.

The issue of the article is concerned with two main issues: loneliness and cohousing relating to the contemporary challenges of an aging society. The authors of the article put the thesis that cohousing understood as a way for the investment, which is the creation of a group of residential units (apartments, houses) of interrelated strict principles, which helps to continuously strengthen the neighborly bonds may be the response to the loneliness of the elderly.

This article focuses on alternative ways of a residence for the elderly, with particular emphasis on the concept of intergenerational houses in the context of existing opportunities in Poland. The issue of intergenerational houses juxtaposed with considerations about aging in general and the consequences for the phenomena described by various disciplines of social and humanities sciences.

The aim of the article is to present a concept of research - related to urban renewal directions of urban spaces and an aging population in the context of three basic activity in human life, such as: work, edu- cation, leisure time. Urban space should respond to the needs of a diverse socjety, that limited in this re- search project for the elderly, and the aging society should function effectively, so it is necessary to apply essential humanistic approach to urban planning and design. The purpose of this article is response to answer the question of how space should be designed that older people can fulfill their needs for work, education and leisure? The inspiration for this research is skipping the area in terms of urban planning and urban design in the context of three major human activity in Poland. The article uses an interdisciplinary approach in two key disciplines: architecture and urban planning, and psychology. In three spatial scales: macro, meso and micro authors presented the concept of research directions of urban renewal (dynamic, stable and shrinking) in the context of demographic changes (three age groups of an aging population), take into account lower level of human activity: work, study and leisure time. The whole concept of research is a proposal of approach for a research study on prob- lems instead of demographic changes and the adequacy of the contemporary European cities.
