In the 30’s and 40’s of the 20th century neo-liberal German scientists (the so-called the Freiburg School), gathered around professor Walter Eucken, developed a socio-political doctrine called ordoliberalism. From this circle came a thinker who strongly criticized some assumptions of classical liberalism and exposed the negative consequences of the dogmatic application of this doctrine to the reality of social life. His name was Wilhelm Röpke – a prominent German economist, sociologist and philosopher. This article is about his diagnosis of crisis in modern society – understood as a result of implementing the extreme liberal principles. This crisis puts human individuals in a very difficult position, because it deprives them of their natural support which can facilitate their personal development. In order to overcome the crisis proper conditions for individuals need to be created. Only then can they live according to their true nature which is fundamentally social. This means a constant appreciation of the social sense of human existence because only within a community can a human being acquire an appropriate life orientation, especially a moral one. Also, a person so formed may become a participant in the market game with no fear of getting lost in unbridled consumerism
