Orpheus, Dionysus and dreams of regeneration: Some philosophic and literary themes of the 19th century

The article is focused on analysis of the metaphor or “palingenesis” (new birth, re-birth, regeneration) in philosophic, literary, social and political contexts of the 19th century. The author analyzes the history of the metaphor from the romantic Orphic context (Ballanche, Chateaubriand, Michelet, Mickiewicz) to the fin de siècle’s Dionysian context. Through the history of this metaphor the author shows a number of key topics of the 19th century: a vision of the human history as a cycle of catastrophes, a concept of humanity as a single body going through the history of “deaths” and “new births”, and a belief that the human history necessarily goes through catastrophic revolutions. The story goes to Nietzsche’s “Ewige Wiederkehr des Gleichen” that the author shows as both continuation of the 19th century topics, and the end of the palingenesis discourse.

The article is analyzing the concept of liquid ideologies, in particular in Western, Ukrainian and Russian political cultures. The author argues that in the past two centuries ideologies, despite their “solid” or “architectonic” claims, always tended to be “liquid”, exchanging ideas, concepts, images, metaphors between themselves. Ukrainian Maidan protests in 2013-2014 have also showed the liquidity of ideologies in the present historical moment: Maidan was a cocktail of liberal, right-wing and left-wing ideologies. The article also introduces new concepts describing the current political moment: zoopolitics, geopolitical oligarchy, post-terrorism, suicide states, revolution of the giving.

Будинок, палац, храм, місто: європейська цивілізація будується навколо архітектонічних метафор. «Основа», «фундамент», «стовпи», «базис», «надбудова», «план», «проект», «площа», «майдан»: багато що крутиться навколо ідеї будівлі та міського простору. Цивілізація є передусім архітектонічним феноменом: вона народжується там, де будують — будинки з каменю, норми на камені, інституції, міцні, як камінь. Цивілізація має на чомусь триматися, а її правил мають дотримуватися: все її життя, все її саморозуміння крутяться навколо архітектонічної уяви.

To comprehend the Maidan phenomenon the Editorial Board of “Filosofska dumka” has invited for discussion the participants of the Revolution of Dignity — philosophers, historians, journalists. Can this phenomenon be comprehended with the use of the steady social and ideological definitions, and does it require the change of the political vocabulary? Had the Maidan an ideology / ideologies and had it influence on popularity of certain ideologies? Maidan and political radicalism: the right-wing and left-wing participants in the Maidan — phantoms or real forces? The Maidan and the state — opposition or complementarity? How did the Maidan realize itself? Which were the principles of self-organization and activities of the Maidan? What was the religion role in the Maidan? Has the Maidan gone or does it continue? The participants of the round-table meeting tried to find answers to these questions.
