The growing competition in foreign markets and the increasing demand of buyers force entrepreneurs to constantly adapt to changing conditions. This is often accompanied by the internationalisation of companies. In fact, the internationalisation of business is one of the biggest challenges for Polish firms. The article contains the results of empirical studies conducted in 2010-2011 in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, as part of the project “Factors determining the competitive advantage of the development of food processing companies from Wielkopolskie region in the international market”. The aim of this study is to describe the forms of internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises of the food sector in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, and to identify the barriers encountered in the process. This is done on the basis of secondary sources: theoretical implications based on the relevant literature; these are later verified with the help of conducted survey. The temporal scope of the study covers the years 2008-2011.

Wszechobecna globalizacja obejmuje swym zasięgiem coraz więcej dziedzin życia, dlatego jednym z ważniejszych procesów zachodzących we współczesnej gospodarce jest kształtowanie tzw. globalnej wioski. Globalizacja i w konsekwencji internacjonalizacja, stanowi jedno z największych wyzwań dla polskich przedsiębiorstw. Artykuł zawiera wyniki badań empirycznych prowadzonych w latach 2010–2011 na terenie województwa wielkopolskiego, będących częścią projektu „Czynniki determinujące kształtowanie przewagi konkurencyjnej przedsiębiorstw przetwórstwa żywnościowego Wielkopolski na rynku międzynarodowym”. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest rozpoznanie przyczyn i barier internacjonalizacji firm przetwórstwa żywnościowego Wielkopolski. W realizacji celu zastosowano źródła wtórne – implikacje teoretyczne powstały w oparciu o studia literatury przedmiotu, natomiast ich weryfikacji dokonano na podstawie badań ankietowych.

In pursuing were used the secondary sources – theoretical implications are based on studies of the literature, and their verification was done on the basis of the survey.

Omnipresent globalization engulfs more and more areas of life, which is why one of the most important processes in today's economy is shaping the so-called global village. Both globalization and the consequent internationalization constitute some of the biggest challenges for Polish companies. In addition, the intensity of competitive businesses in the global market forces companies to seek competitive advantages and improve their abilities in the process. The article contains the results of empirical research conducted in the years 2010-2011 in Greater Poland as part of the project titled "Determinants of competitive advantage of Greater Poland's food processing companies in the international market." This paper also contains data from both theoretical and empirical evidence on building competitive advantage in international markets provided by the analyzed group of internationalized SMEs. The aim of this study is to identify the factors determining the formation of competitive advantage of food processing companies from Greater Poland, which in turn contributed to the internationalization of those businesses. Secondary sources were used in pursuing the goal - theoretical implications were based on studies of literature, and they were verified by surveys. In addition, the following methods were used: description, visualization and statistical techniques. The time range of the undertaken work covers the years 2008-2011.
