Francis Bacon: eutanazja czy opieka paliatywna?

Francisa Bacona projekt nowoczesnej medycyny i towarzyszącej jej etyki, wyłożony w De Dignitate et Augmentis Scientiarum (1623), zawiera postulat dotyczący łagodzenia przez lekarzy bólu i cierpienia beznadziejnie chorych, umierających pacjentów. Odwołując się do starożytnej idei „łatwej śmierci”, Bacon nazywa proponowaną przez siebie praktykę „eutanazją zewnętrzną”. W niniejszym artykule dowodzę, że wbrew popularnemu mniemaniu Bacon antycypuje nie eutanazję „w stylu holenderskim”, czyli „zabójstwo z litości”, lecz raczej opiekę paliatywną, w której łagodzenie cierpień śmierci nie wiąże się z rozmyślnym uśmiercaniem pacjentów.

Francis Bacon’s program for modern medicine and its ethics, developed in De Dignitate et Augmentis Scientiarum (1623), includes the requirement that doctors alleviate the pain and suffering of terminally ill patients. Invoking the ancient idea of an “easy death”, Bacon calls this course of action “outward euthanasia”. This article demonstrates that, contrary to widespread opinion, Bacon does not anticipate “Dutch-style” euthanasia or “mercy-killing”, but rather palliative care without the intentional termination of a patient’s life.

O prywacyjnej koncepcji zła śmierci

Artykuł jest krótką prezentacją tzw. prywacyjnej koncepcji zła śmierci. Zakłada ona, że śmierć nie jest dla nas złem ze względu na jakiekolwiek swoje cechy pozytywne (których wszak nie posiada), lecz jedynie ze względu na pewne dobre, wartościowe i pożądane rzeczy, których nas pozbawia. Wychodząc od słynnego argumentu Epikura przeciwko lękowi przed śmiercią, przedstawiam prywacyjną koncepcję złą śmierci autorstwa Thomasa Nagela, a także omawiam wysuwany przeciw niej zarzut – że nierozsądne jest rozpatrywanie zła śmierci z perspektywy „subiektywnego poczucia nieśmiertelności”. Wreszcie, rozróżniam w obrębie koncepcji prywacyjnej dwa poziomy– „absolutny” oraz „relatywny”, który pozwala postrzegać niektóre śmierci jako mniejsze zło („negatywne dobro”).

This paper is a short presentation of the Deprivation Account of the Evil of Death. According to this account, death is not an evil to us due to any of its positive features (it has none), but only due to some good, valuable and desirable things it deprives us of. Departing from Epicurus’ famous argument against the fear of death, I briefly reconstruct the Deprivation Account, as proposed by Thomas Nagel, and then discuss one important objection against it – that it is implausible to judge the evil of death from the standpoint of “subjective immortality”. Finally, I distinguish two levels within the Deprivation Account – an “absolute” one, and a “relative” one, which enables us to judge some deaths as lesser evil or “negative good”.

Przedmiotem artykułu są historyczne aspekty i różne konotacje pojęcia eutanazji. Wyjaśniam w nim różnicę pomiędzy etymologicznym („dobra śmierć”) a współczesnym („zabójstwo z litości”) sensem tego pojęcia. Poprzez omówienie odpowiednich fragmentów klasycznych dzieł filozoficznych, m.in. The Advancement of Learning Francisa Bacona, a zwłaszcza Państwa Platona i Utopii Thomasa More’a, wskazuję i objaśniam pewne często spotykane nieporozumienia spowodowane mylną interpretacją różnych znaczeń pojęcia eutanazji.

The article is devoted to historical aspects of the concept of euthanasia, as well as its various connotations. It clarifies the difference between its etymological sense (“good death”) and its contemporary sense (“mercy killing”). By discussing relevant passages from classical philosophical works, e.g. Francis Bacon’s The Advancement of Learning, and especially Plato’s Republic and Thomas More’s Utopia, it identifies and explains common confusions resulting from misinterpretations of the concept of euthanasia.

The article discusses the current state of edition of legal historical sources in Poland from the perspective of historians of political and legal thought. The authors begin by explaining the idea and scope of „source base”specific to their field of research. Three following issues are discussed later: (a) translation of foreign sources into Polish; (b) critical (re)edition of classic Polish texts in political thought; (c) edition of 20th century documental sources by the Institute of National Remembrance and The KARTA Centre. The authors make a number of comments and requests concerning the subject of discussion.
