Recent studies on the minds of other species are associated with a variety of issues, including: social communication, language and numerical skills, production and use of tools, theory of mind, mental time travel, and consciousness. This text presents the current trends in research in the last three aspects of the functions of the mind – each of which is acquired by a human being in the early ontogeny, while there is a definite relationship between them. «Theory of mind» is a term for a specific cognitive ability. An individual has a theory of mind when it attributes mental states to itself and to others. Certainly, the lapse in time travel in animals is significantly narrower compared to man. However, it seems that animals have and use some form of personal memory of the past, namely, episodic-like memory. They also have abilities of anticipation and a planned behavior limited in time based on prospective memory. Finally, consciousness – a condition or ability to be conscious or aware of something but in its most complex form – is recognized by the person through their own actions and feelings, thus being aware of their own thoughts, insights, and other events taking place in their mind. Based on this kind of definition we can assume the existence of at least two kinds of consciousness. We can talk about perceptual awareness wherever there is a conscious perception, although the content of consciousness may be processing information to anticipate or recall past events. Animals with the ability of perceptual awareness not only react to stimuli, but intentionally select the appropriate response, based on the active processing of information. The second type is the awareness of self-centered consciousness that allows one to think about thinking, emotions, and perception, referred to as introspective consciousness. It is this kind of awareness that allows you to have a mental representation of yourself and others that has a direct relationship, and for some is even an essential component of mental time travel and theory of mind. Currently, it is believed that many species of animals, including all mammals, birds and other creatures – among them octopuses – use this form of consciousness.

Współczesne badania nad umysłem innych gatunków wiążą się z wieloma różnymi zagadnieniami, w tym między innymi z komunikacją społeczną, kompetencjami językowymi i numerycznymi, wytwarzaniem i używaniem narzędzi, teorią umysłu, mentalnymi podróżami w czasie oraz świadomością. W tekście przedstawione zostały współczesne kierunki badań nad trzema ostatnimi z wymienionych funkcji umysłu – każda z nich jest nabywana przez człowieka we wczesnej ontogenezie, a jednocześnie istnieje między nimi określony związek. Teoria umysłu jest terminem na oznaczenie pewnej specyficznej zdolności poznawczej. Osobnik posiada teorię umysłu, gdy przypisuje sobie i innym stany umysłowe. W zestawieniu z ludzkim horyzont podróży w czasie u zwierząt jest nieporównywalnie węższy. Wydaje się jednak, że zwierzęta mają jakąś osobistą – epizodycznopodobną – formę pamięci przeszłości i ją wykorzystują. Dysponują także zdolnością antycypacji i ograniczonym w czasie planowaniem zachowania na bazie pamięci prospektywnej. Świadomość to stan lub zdolność do bycia przytomnym lub zdawania sobie z czegoś sprawy, natomiast w swojej najbardziej złożonej postaci – rozpoznanie przez podmiot swoich własnych działań i uczuć, czyli zdawanie sobie sprawy z własnych myśli, spostrzeżeń i innych zdarzeń zachodzących w umyśle. W oparciu o tak rozumiane działanie świadomości można przyjąć istnienie przynajmniej dwóch jej rodzajów. Możemy mówić o świadomości percepcyjnej wszędzie tam, gdzie zachodzi świadoma percepcja, choć treściami świadomości może być przetwarzanie informacji w celu antycypacji lub przypominania sobie zdarzeń z przeszłości. Zwierzę posiadające zdolność świadomości percepcyjnej nie tylko reaguje na bodźce, ale wybiera intencjonalnie właściwą reakcję w oparciu o aktywne przetwarzanie informacji. Drugi rodzaj świadomości: świadomość świadomości skoncentrowana na sobie, pozwalająca myśleć o myśleniu, emocjach, spostrzeganiu, zwan jest świadomością introspekcyjną. To właśnie ten rodzaj świadomości, pozwalający na posiadanie mentalnej reprezentacji siebie oraz innych, ma bezpośredni związek z mentalnymi podróżami w czasie oraz z teorią umysłu, a według niektórych badaczy stanowi wręcz niezbędny ich komponent. Obecnie uważa się, że wiele gatunków zwierząt, w tym wszystkie ssaki i ptaki a także inne stworzenia, na przykład ośmiornice, posługują się świadomością.

EU targets on increasing the share of renewable energy in total energy generation from the present 7% to 12% in 2010 reąuires an additional annual production of 53 million tons of wood by 2010 (if the present trend is continued only 10 million additional tons will be produced annually). Europe’s common agricultural policy [CAP, 2004] is shifting towards development and diversification of economic activities, enabling multiple activities and alternative income. These two goals can bereached by biomass production on short rotation plantations (SRPs). Biomass cultivated in order to generate energy, can be used in a wide variety of biomass conversion products and processes, which fali into four major categories: combustion, gasification, hydrolysis and fermentation, which can produce electricity, heat, combined heat and power and ethanol, respectively [Ciechanowicz, 2003; Szlachta, 2005; Nowicki, 2003], The economic advantages of using SRPs for energy production are also very important eg. decreased emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere [Karaczun and Kassenberg, 2001].
