It comes as a great challenge for the energy sector to replace the depleted sources of power. However, at the same time, it provides an opportunity for diversifying energy production sources, for modernising the power industry and for reducing its harm fulness to human health and the environment. Due to the huge scale of the expected modernisation, a real challenge is to safeguard funds for such a big investment. And when considering the deadline for such undertakings, the activities in this regard call for intensification. These challenges overlap with the proposed liberalization of the market, volatility of energy prices and its carriers, and decarbonisation resulting from the climate policy of the European Union, and dynamic technological changes that affect the transformation of the energy sector in the world. Therefore, the energy safety must accompany the affordability of energy prices and environmental pro tection – which is a big challenge for the power industry. Thus, the Supreme Audit Office has taken a decision to examine whether the scale of the investments under taken by national electric energy producers in the years 2012–2018 met the needs of the economy as for providing sufficient energy supplies. In their article, the authors discuss the detailed results of the audit.
