Starting with the reflection on the contemporary visual turn the author supports the idea of the cultural theory of literature. This transdisciplinary domain should base on the Lotman’s universal concept of a text, consider the structural similarity of picture and description, use the common analytic tools as symbol, metaphor and space. The universal usefulness of the latest category (separately discussed is especially stressed and proved in the analyses of specific examples of Polish New Wave poetry (Białoszewski and Barańczak) and experimental film (Neumann, Szczechura, Rybczyński) where the space’s respectively real and poetic meaning is particularly clear and similar. Finally, in epistemological context author distinguishes real, parabolic and metaphysical space. In ontological: filled space and spatial continuum.
