The article presents the activities of disability rights movement and activists with disabilities fighting for the possibility of leading an independent life, for equal opportunities and human rights. In the context of the theory of social movements, civil disobedience and self-organization of people with disabilities, the author shows this fight in the prism of two protests of people with disabilities and their parents that took place in 2014 and 2018 in the Polish Parliament.

Autorka w kontekście teorii ruchów społecznych, nieposłuszeństwa obywatelskiego i samoorganizacji osób niepełnosprawnych ukazuje ową walkę w pryzmacie dwóch protestów osób z niepełnosprawnościami i ich rodziców, które miały miejsce w 2014 i 2018 roku w Sejmie RP.

The employment policy and vocational activity support system for people with intellectual disabilities in Poland: emancipation policy or apparent actions?

This article presents problematics related to social policy and the system supporting the vocational activity of persons with intellectual disabilities in Poland. Analyses aimed at finding an answer to the question posed in the title are based on the results of a research project entitled Employment and disability. An analysis of the vocational experience of people with intellectual disabilities in Poland, which aimed at an exploration of the policy of the employment of persons with disabilities, practices in the area of employment services, and a reconstruction of the experience of subjects involved in the work situation: job coaches, persons with intellectual disabilities, and coordinators of employment projects. The methodological framework of the project was provided by the grounded theory set in social constructivism as presented in Charmaz’s works. The research material was collected in 25 workplaces employing persons with disabilities in various parts of Poland, mainly by means of in-depth interviews, observation, and field notes. The paper presents only a small  fragment of the research results. The analyses focus on the presentation of the assumptions, goals, and trends of the employment policy, ways of functioning of the system of support of the vocational activity of persons with intellectual disabilities, and the confrontation of these systemic assumptions with the experience of persons involved in the implementation of this employment policy in the Polish reality. The article is therefore a critical analysis of the current policy of the employment of persons with intellectual disabilities, unmasking the existing paradoxes and apparent actions in the system of vocational support and the labour market

Intellectual disability is a phenomenon focusing the attention of numerous fields of science; biology, medicine, psychology, pedagogy as well as sociology. In the social understanding of intellectual disability, it is viewed as a ‘social fact’, as some social construct. A construct which is being created in the course of social definition, interpretation, granting meaning and changing them, and which depends on both the knowledge and the experiences of a social group. The area of construction and the exchange of meanings is the language and the discourse. The author of the text accepts the thesis that the social reality is constructed by means of discourse which is being viewed as a key factor in the social construction of social life and an important element of the power relationship. This thesis allowed the author to see the language and its captivating power as a tool of domination and exclusion or emancipation. The author presents the results of analyses which constitute answers to the following questions; How, in the contemporary Polish society intellectual disability is shaped in the public discourse? What networks of meaning and what discourses of intellectual disability appear there? The conducted research on discourse construction of intellectual disability was based on a critical analysis of a discourse.

Niepełnosprawność intelektualna jest fenomenem skupiającym zainteresowanie wielu dyscyplin naukowych: biologiczno – medycznych, psychologiczno – pedagogicznych jak i społecznych. W społecznym ujęciu niepełnosprawność intelektualną postrzega się jako „fakt społeczny”, jako pewien społeczny konstrukt. Konstrukt, który powstaje w toku społecznego definiowania, interpretowania, nadawania mu znaczeń oraz ich wymiany, i który zależny jest od wiedzy i doświadczenia grupy społecznej. Polem konstrukcji i wymiany znaczeń jest język i dyskurs. Autorka niniejszego tekstu przyjmuje tezę, że rzeczywistość społeczna jest konstruowana poprzez dyskurs, który postrzega jako kluczowy czynnik w społecznej konstrukcji życia społecznego i ważny elementem relacji władzy. Owa teza pozwoliła jej spojrzeć na język i jego zniewalającą moc, jako na narzędzie dominacji i wykluczania lub emancypacji. Autorka prezentuje efekty analiz, które są odpowiedziami na postawione pytania: jak we współczesnym, polskim społeczeństwie konstruowana jest niepełnosprawność intelektualna w dyskursie publicznym? Jakie sieci znaczeń i dyskursy niepełnosprawności intelektualnej się w nim pojawiają? Przeprowadzone badania dyskursywnych konstrukcji niepełnosprawności intelektualnej zostały oparte o krytyczną analizę dyskursu.
