The purpose of this paper is to show the socio-cultural dysfunctions of tourism in Egypt, focusing on the example of urfi marriages. Through an analysis of this form of customary marriage, adapted to the context of tourism, the paper interprets it against the background of traditional marriage in Islamic culture. Urfi marriages are sham unions – in the eyes of the law, the man and woman are not legally married – but when contracted between Egyptians and female tourists, they serve to legitimize sexual relations, which are otherwise permissible in Islam only within the bounds of marriage.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie społeczno-kulturowych dysfunkcji turystyki w Egipcie na przykładzie małżeństw urfi. Dokonano tego poprzez analizę fenomenu małżeństwa zwyczajowego, zaadaptowanego na grunt turystyczny, i jego interpretację na tle tradycyjnego małżeństwa w kulturze islamu. Małżeństwa urfi mają charakter pozorny – w świetle prawa kobieta i mężczyzna nie są małżeństwem – jednak zawierane pomiędzy Egipcjanami a turystkami służą do legalizacji kontaktów seksualnych, dozwolonych w islamie jedynie w obrębie małżeństwa.
