Trudno jednoznacznie odpowiedzieć na postawione w tytule pytanie. Estetyka wykorzystująca inspiracje ekologii znajduje się raczej in statu nascendi, a jej ostateczny kształt wyłoni się poprzez wymagające niemało trudu przepracowanie dotychczasowej tradycji filozofii i estetyki przyrody. Chciałabym przedstawić dwa przykłady takich zmagań obecnych we współczesnej estetyce; pierwszy wywodzi się z kręgu amerykańskiego, drugi – z tradycji myśli niemieckiej: 1. Arnolda Berleanta projekt estetyki środowiskowej (environmental aesthetics), wychodzącej od krytyki kantowskiego pojęcia bezinteresowności doświadczenia estetycznego i zmierzającej ku modelowi estetyki zaangażowanej; 2. Gernota Böhmego propozycja nowej filozofii i estetyki przyrody; Chciałabym ustosunkować się krytycznie do obu propozycji wskazując na trudności pogodzenia tradycyjnego pojmowania pojęć takich jak natura, estetyka, doświadczenie z wymogami światopoglądu ekologicznego, przyznającego człowiekowi inne miejsce w świecie niż to, jakie wyznaczyła mu myśl kartezjańska.

It is difficult to answer the question posed in the title. Aesthetics that makes use of ecological inspirations is in the process of coming to be; its final version will require a reworking of traditional philosophy and the aesthetics of nature. I present two examples of such work in current aesthetics; the first is found in American circles, the second in the German tradition: 1. Arnold Berleant’s project of environmental aesthetics, arising from a criticism of Kant’s concept of the disinterestedness of aesthetic experience and tending toward a model of engaged aesthetics; 2. Gernot Böhm’s proposal of a new philosophy and aesthetics of nature. I criticize both proposals, pointing to difficulties in reconciling the traditional understanding of such concepts as nature, aesthetics, and experience with the requirements of an ecological worldview that grants man a place in the world that differs from that provided him by Cartesian thought.

The paper analyzes the concept of landscape and its various embodiments in art and nature. On the one hand, one can claim that our understanding of the landscape is constituted by conceptual oppositions like human/non-human, artifactual/natural, culture/nature; on the other, one may notice that landscapes occur in the space “between” these oppositions. Furthering this observation, I lodge an objection to the approach of certain exponents of environmental aesthetics who opt for replacing the notion of landscape by that of environment because I would argue that the former is still informative.
