Samostanowienie osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną jest zagadnieniem istotnym z punktu widzenia potrzeb tych osób, zadań rehabilitacji i edukacji, jak i prawa wszystkich ludzi do decydowania o swoim życiu w sposób wolny od niepotrzebnych nacisków ingerencji zewnętrznej. Jednocześnie stanowi duże wyzwanie dla osób wspierających, członków rodziny, a także pedagogów i psychologów zajmujących się niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Ciągle żywe są – także wśród wielu specjalistów – wątpliwości, na ile postulat samostanowienia tej grupy to prawdziwa potrzeba i konieczność, a na ile jest to wymóg ideologiczny. Kolejne wątpliwości dotyczą granic samostanowienia w przypadku tej grupy osób z niepełnosprawnością. W artykule przedstawione zostały opinie rodziców oraz dorosłych osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną na temat szczęśliwej i niezależnej dorosłości z uwzględnieniem możliwości samostanowienia na podstawie analizy wybranych badań.

Self-determination of people with intellectual disability is an important issue from the point of view of the needs of these people, the aims of rehabilitation and education, as well as the right of all people to decide about their lives freely, with no unnecessary pressure or external interference. At the same time, it is a great challenge for supporters, family members as well as special educators and psychologists dealing with intellectual disabilities. There are still many doubts as to the extent to which the postulate of self-determination of this group is a real need and necessity, and to what extent it is an ideological requirement. Further doubts concern the limits of selfdetermination in the case of this group of people. The article presents the opinions of parents and adults with intellectual disabilities on the subject of happy and independent adulthood, including the possibility of self-determination based on the analysis of selected studies.
