In the church historical archives gathering archival materials created by organizational units of the Roman Catholic Church, the legacy of priest engaged in scientific activity is also preserved. The legal status of this sort of archival materials implies definite consequences in the area of gathering, processing as well as sharing. The article is the first attempt to show the variety of heritage placed in the Archdiocese Archives in Katowice, as well as to outline the problems related to this specific group of archival sources.

Nadzór archiwalny w praktyce kontrolnych działań kościelnej władzy zwierzchniej posiada w historii Kościoła katolickiego wielowiekową tradycję. W toku biskupich i dziekańskich wizytacji sprawdzany był nie tylko fakt regularnego zapisywania ochrzczonych, zaślubionych oraz pogrzebanych parafian, ale także stan zachowania i warunki przechowywania pozostałej dokumentacji wytworzonej przez urzędy parafialne. Po 1945 r. w zmienionych warunkach ustrojowych doszło jednak w Polsce do przerwania ciągłości w praktyce nadzoru archiwalnego. W diecezji katowickiej od 1997 r. realizowany jest projekt centralizacji parafialnych zasobów archiwalnych w Archiwum Archidiecezjalnym w Katowicach. Projekt ten oznacza zarazem dokonanie pierwszej w okresie powojennym całościowej inwentaryzacji archiwalnego dziedzictwa diecezji katowickiej.

The archival supervision in the control -related activities of the ecclesiastical authorities has a rich tradition of many centuries in the history of the Catholic Church. In the course of episcopal and dean inspections not only the fact of regular record -keeping of baptisms, nuptials and burials of parishioners was checked but also the state of preservation and the condition of the storage of the remaining documents produced by parish offices. However, after 1945, in the altered conditions of the political system, the continuity of the practice of the archival supervision was broken. Since 1997 in the Katowice diocese a project of the centralisation of the parish archive resources in the Archdiocesan Archives in Katowice has been realised. At the same time, the project entails the first complete inventory -taking of the archival heritage of the Katowice diocese to be carried out in the post -war period.
