In Deutschland gehören 60% der Menschen einer christlichen Kirche an; jeder Zweite von ihnen ist katholisch. Obwohl Staat und Kirche voneinander getrennt sind, gibt es auf sozialen und kulturellen Gebieten vielfältige Kooperationen. Eine große Herausforderung erwächst aus der rückläufigen Zahl der Priester, die bislang durch ausländische Priester sowie durch andere pastorale Berufe (Ständige Diakone sowie Pastoral- und Gemeindereferenten) einigermaßen kompensiert werden konnte. Es muss jedoch nach neuen pastoralen Wegen gesucht werden, damit die Kirche in Deutschland auch künftig lebendig und handlungsfähig sein kann.

In Germany, 60% of the population belong to a Christian church; every other of them is a Catholic. In spite of the separation between state and church, there is cooperation in social and cultural domains. A great challenge arises from the regressive number of priests which so far could be compensated to some extent by foreign priests and other pastoral ministries (permenant deacons, “Pastoralreferenten”, and “Gemeindereferenten”). However, new pastoral ways must be found to keep the Catholic Church in Germany vital and to prepare it for the future when the number of faithful and clergy will not necessarily go up, but rather continue going down.

Dieser Beitrag stellt zunächst dar, was heutige Jugendliche in Deutschland, von denen weniger als ein Drittel katholisch getauft ist, über Glaube und Kirche denken. Anschließend kommt die breite Praxis der Jugendpastoral in Deutschland zur Sprache, aber auch theoretische Konzepte, denen sie sich verpflichtet weiß. Der Beitrag schließt mit einem Plädoyer, sich als Seelsorger auf die Jugendlichen von heute und ihre existentiellen Fragen wirklich einzulassen.

This article at first describes what today’s young German people – less than a third of whom are baptized catholic – think about believe and about the Church. Then the diversified practice of youth pastoral care is raised, but also the theoretical concepts on which this practice is predicated. The article finishes with a plea that persons in pastoral care should really get involved with the present-day adolescents and their existential questions.
