The paper deals first and foremost with impairments of cognitive processes, memory above all, in the elderly. These issues were overviewed in the context of the currently unsatisfactory level of care provision to the aged. Social and psychological consequences of age-related cognitive impairments as well as problems faced by impaired seniors and their families were outlined. Moreover, age-related changes both in the psychological sphere and intellectual functioning were discussed, with the focus on dementias (including Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia). Finally, the problems of assessment and rehabilitation of memory impairments were briefly presented.

Pracę poświęcono przede wszystkim zaburzeniom procesów poznawczych, głównie pamięci, u osób w podeszłym wieku. Problematykę tę przedstawiono na tle obecnie niezadowalającego stanu opieki nad ludźmi starymi. Omówiono społeczne i psychologiczne konsekwencje zaburzeń poznawczych związanych z wiekiem oraz problemy chorych seniorów i ich rodzin. Zasygnalizowano także zagadnienia zmian w sferze psychicznej i funkcjonowaniu intelektualnym ludzi starych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zespołu otępiennego (choroby Alzheimera i otępienia czołowo-skroniowego). Przedstawiono również problemy diagnozy i rehabilitacji zaburzeń pamięci.

The paper deals with problems of the aging society and with consequences of the increased human lifespan. The focus is on psychological problems of aging, adaptation to old age, the role of the family, and the role of seniors in the community. Moreover, stereotypes concerning the elderly, stability of such stereotypes, counteracting them, and their evolution are discussed. Initiatives on behalf of the elderly are presented including international ones, also those under the aegis of the UNO. Institutions involved in care provision to seniors, such as nursing homes, hospices, but also golden age universities striving to educate seniors and motivate them to be active are briefly described.

Praca poświęcona jest problematyce starzenia się społeczeństwa oraz konsekwencjom wzrostu długości życia ludzkiego. Skoncentrowano się na psychologicznych problemach starzenia się, przystosowaniu się do starości, roli rodziny oraz społecznej roli osób starszych. Część uwagi poświęcono stereotypom dotyczącym osób starszych, ich trwałości, walce z nimi i zmianom, jakim podlegały. Przedstawiono działania podejmowane wobec osób starszych, w tym inicjatywy podejmowane na forum międzynarodowym, także pod egidą ONZ. Wspomniano również o instytucjach zajmujących się osobami starszymi, takimi jak domy opieki społecznej i hospicja, ale także uniwersytety trzeciego wieku, związane z kształceniem i aktywizacją osób starszych.
