The engraving A Midnight modern Conversation by the English genre and satirical painter and printmaker William Hogarth (1697–1764) belongs to the artist’s most discussed and interpreted works ever since its creation in 1733. On the basis of two detailed period commentaries on this engraving by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1786 and 1794), the study draws attention to Hogarth’s representation of sociability from the point of view of theories of conversation and conviviality in the 18th century, and from the point of view of the philosophy of human nature.

The article is mapping the translations and critical reflections on German, Austrian and Swiss literature in the Slovak literary journals Slovenské pohľady, Revue svetovej literatúry and Mladá tvorba in the literary field in Slovakia of the 1960ś. Talking about these publications, we can see a competition of two models of perception of foreign literature: on one hand, the model of cultural representation and on the other hand, the model of democratic literary discussion. Especially at the end of the 1960ś the second model prevailed. In the 1960ś we can also record the entry of a new generation of the Slovak Germanists on the literary stage. Nevertheless, this generation is gradually decimated after 1968. Despite the disfavour of the following decades, the accumulated cultural capital brought book translations of modern German, Austrian and Swiss authors in the late 1980ś and 1990ś. The journal culture of the 1960ś also contributed to the making of historical links between classical literary modernity, the avant-garde ad the literary present.

The paper aims to map the field of interest in conversation as a phenomenon in various arts (cultural history, social science, linguistics) in the last few decades, assuming that the field was established in order to differentiate it from other similar notions such as a dialogue. What has become the centre of attention is the acknowledgement of conversation as a social, cultural and linguistic phenomenon, the main function of which in different periods of time and social environments has been that of social stabilization, and the various forms of which can be studied using as sources the oral as well as written records, which enables access to the historical forms of conversational culture. The writer offers a mutual confrontation between several attempts at defining conversation and formulates competences and certain tasks which can be faced by literary research on conversation.

Although classical psychoanalysis and its off-shoots has not brought any “theory or narration” that would become part of literary narratology, it has postulated several basic elements of “general psychoanalytic narratology” as implicit psychoanalytic theory of narration (the therapeutic function of narration, dialogic part, in-depth interpretation, the thematization of interpersonal relationships). At the same time, the article analyses how the interpretation of the dynamic (narrative) aspect of literature has contributed to the creation of psychoanalytic theory itself and the role played by the reliability or unreliability of the narrator in it.
