The theory of Sensory Integration explains the chaos in a child’s behaviour by the lack of cooperation of all the senses simultaneously. At the same time, it provides an opportunity to organize the information coming from the senses through appropriately selected exercises and games. Integration of stimuli is necessary for the formation of ideas about the self and the world, assimilation of knowledge, purposeful actions, planning and elaboration of behaviour. Working with a child with sensory integration disorders requires an individual approach, understanding of the child’s specific needs and cooperation with a variety of specialists. The first step a parent takes toward improving a child’s well-being and functioning is observation. The child also relies on the knowledge and attitude of the parent. The analysis of the literature undertaken is intended to show the need to understand issues related to sensory integration disorders. The article also presents tips for parents on how to support the development of sensory integration, not only through therapy.

Teoria Integracji Sensorycznej tłumaczy chaos w zachowaniu dziecka brakiem współpracy wszystkich zmysłów jednocześnie. Zarazem daje szansę na uporządkowanie informacji płynących od zmysłów w drodze odpowiednio dobranych ćwiczeń i zabaw. Zintegrowanie bodźców jest konieczne do kształtowania wyobrażeń o sobie i świecie, przyswajania wiedzy, celowych działań, planowania i opracowania zachowań. Praca z dzieckiem z zaburzeniami integracji sensorycznej wymaga indywidualnego podejścia, zrozumienia specyficznych potrzeb dziecka oraz współpracy z przeróżnymi specjalistami. Pierwszym krokiem, jaki czyni rodzic w kierunku poprawy samopoczucia dziecka i jego funkcjonowania, jest obserwacja. Od wiedzy i postawy rodzica zależą dalsze losy dziecka, u którego przetwarzanie informacji docierających z otoczenia tworzy chaos i bałagan. Podjęta analiza literatury ma na celu potrzebę ukazania zagadnień związanych z zaburzeniami integracji sensorycznej. Artykuł przedstawia także wskazówki dla rodziców, jak wspomagać rozwój integracji sensorycznej, nie tylko na drodze terapii.
