Some designations of former professions that had a form of compound nouns in the Old Polish, such as e.g. bartodziej (keeper of wild forest bees), kołodziej (wheelwright), konował (veterinary surgeon), piwowar (brewer), became a basis of numerous Polish surnames. The article discusses their number, phonetic-graphic and word-formative variations and geographic distribution.
