The article discusses a journey of a young Englishman Robert Bargrave (1628-1661), who in the early 1650s travelled from Constantinople to England. The travel diary recording this journey reflects Bargrave’s keen interest in the customs, everyday life and languages as well as natural conditions and economy of the places he visited and shows that he tried to place it in a wider context. As a result, closer analysis of this text gives us an excellent opportunity to examine the picture of East -Central Europe as seen by a mid-seventeenth century Englishman and the way he perceived it in relation to both the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe.

Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth in English corantos (1620‑1642)The article discusses news reports from or dealing with Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth published in English corantos in the 1620s and 1630s. Analysis of news items published in corantos, their content, number, etc. show that corantos’ publishers and English readers were especially interested in military and political news, for example on Polish‑Turkish and Polish‑Swedish conflicts, and internal political situation including Sigismund III’s relations with the opposition, and some of the reports were very detailed and reliable. The large numbers of reports datelined from Vienna, Prague and Silesia and the wide international context of Polish news could have resulted from the fact that the situation in the Habsburg dominions was in the focus of English readers’ interest. The presence of Polish news in the corantos proves also that by the 1620s, in spite of all possible impediments, Poland‑Lithuania was already a part of the larger pan‑European system consisting of interfacing networks making it possible to transmit news on a pretty regular basis from one part of the Continent to another.

The Collection of George Thomason (1640–1660). History, Contents and ImportanceThe text presents the history and research possibilities provided by a unique collection of books, prints, newspapers and manuscripts gathered by the 17th–century London bookseller George Thomason. Known also as the Thomason Tracts, the collection, containing over 20 000 items, is one of the most important assemblies of primary sources from the period of the Civil War and Interregnum and has been extensively used by historians. The article also argues that due to Thomason’s diligence in collecting early periodical publications and the fact that the Thomason Tracts have been preserved almost intact they are of key importance for anyone planning to conduct research on the history of early English newspapers and journalism.

Kingdome Differing from Other in Europe… Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Seventeenth‑Century English Language Publications The article discusses the image of Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth in seventeenth‑century English language publications, particularly geographic and historical ones. The author proposes a new evaluation and method of interpreting the existing sources, e.g. diplomatic materials and travel accounts, by taking into account the real readership of these texts depending on their type, specific editions as well as the readers’ market. In case of England and Scotland, sources decidedly indicate that due to their developed forms and large number of publications which included information on the Commonwealth, readers could acquire enough information to form a relatively precise opinion of their own on the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The proposal of article is an attempt to understand the narrative how modern elders understanding this technological changes, which are related to digitization and networking of daily life. A quoted material comes from the author’s research project implemented for the needs of the my doctoral thesis concerning the media practices in the context of net „I” production and digital control. However, the research touched a much wider range of issues that arise in the combination of reflection on the analog tools and their digital equivalents. The areas of analysis – including media discourse analysis – open self-esteem of older people about their own media competences. The development of knowledge on this issue in the future may help in the media education or decrease the distance in the so-called generation gap not only in the context of technology use.

Proponowany tekst jest próbą uchwycenia narracji pojmowania przez współczesnych seniorów przemian technologicznych, jakie towarzyszą cyfryzacji i usieciowieniu życia codziennego. Cytowany materiał pochodzi z autorskiego projektu badawczego realizowanego na potrzeby pracy doktorskiej dotyczącej praktyk medialnych w kontekście pojęcia wytwarzania „siebie” i cyfrowej kontroli jednostki.

In February 1633, the twenty-one-year-old Janusz Radziwiłł, son of Krzysztof Radziwiłł, arrived in London as an ambassador of the newly-elected Polish King Władysław IV. The specifics of the mission and the young magnate’s stay in England have not hitherto been well researched. Still, thanks to the analysis of new Polish and English primary sources it is now possible to reconstruct them in detail. This material clearly indicates that the young Radziwiłł’s stay in London was not of only strictly ceremonial nature, but it should be interpreted as a manifestation of the new Polish ruler’s active approach to foreign policy, as well as of the importance of the Radziwiłł family in the international arena.

W lutym 1633 r. dwudziestojednoletni Janusz Radziwiłł, syn księcia Krzysztofa Radziwiłła, przybył do Londynu z misją dyplomatyczną zleconą mu przez nowego polskiego władcę Władysława IV.

The documents adopted by the international community during the UN Conference on the Environment and Development convened in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 make clear the leading role institutions in higher education are to play in transforming contemporary civilisation in the direction of sustainable development. It is beyond dispute that higher education has a critical role to play in developing tomorrow’s decision makers, professionals and citizens. Universities can help with the accomplishment of sustainable development goals if they transform education in this direction, extend their support to interdisciplinary scientific research and ensure the appropriate evolution of the means by which they themselves are managed. However, ensuring that a higher education establishment heads in the direction of sustainability in all academic areas of activity is a difficult process requiring much effort. The article thus presents current international initiatives of the UN in this regard, as well as Higher Education initiatives, alliances and treaties in support of the process, and the objectives and activities of the network of cooperative links between universities that is now taking shape. Also the status of education for sustainable development (ESD) in higher education and existing ESD professional development opportunities for university educators is discussed. In this context, examples of good practice characterising the activity of the University Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development will serve as a case study.

The present investigation has been conducted to compare the level of environmental awareness among the University of Warsaw Bachelor students of selected fields of study, which are: economics, geography and environmental protection. Diagnostic survey method was used to collect data from 180 students. The research interviewees included 60 economics students (equivalent to 33.3% of all respondents), 56 geography students (31.1% of respondents) and 64 environmental science students (35.6% of respondents). The gender division was as follows: 119 females (66.1% of all respondents) and 61 males (33.9%) took part in the research. The survey consisted of two parts. The main part - “The study of environmental awareness” - referred to the dependent variable. Respondents were asked to provide answers to 21 questions. Twenty of them were closed-ended questions, while one was open-ended. The second part was demographics, which referred to independent variable – selected socio-demographic characteristics of respondents. The data were subjected to descriptive and chi-square analyses. Statistical analysis software STATA for Windows was used for statistical analysis. The significance level was set at 5%. The study showed that the field of study significantly affects the answers declared by students in 6 of 21 questions (number: 6, 8, 11, 12, 16 and 20). Gender significantly affects the answers declared by students in 2 questions (number: 2 and 10). It can therefore be assumed that field of study had much stronger influence on student’s level of environmental awareness than their gender.
