The paper consists of three main parts. The first part discusses theoretical assumptions of the policy assimilation in the USA, Canada and Great Britain and some reasons for its failure. The second part presents „the melting pot theory” which does not hold criticism, either. The third part deals with the theory of cultural pluralism approving ethnic discrepancies. The author assumes that all ethnic groups living in a given country share consciousness of their ethnic diversity and strong need for institutions connecting an individual with the state. The author presents both the ideas of multiculturalism as well as the Australian policy toward the problem. He speaks for the holistic multiculturalism as the only way to true integration of emigrants.
