The article concerns Polish missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word working in Ghana. Basing on their life and missionary commitment, the author wants to capture the clear features that characterize the missionary not only in the described country. The author relies primarily on personal accounts of the Divine Word Missionaries living in Ghana, most of which appeared in the journal “Misjonarz”. Even on the basis of this superficial analysis, it can be seen that, on the one hand the missionary is an ordinary man who wrestles not only with external difficulties, but also with his own human weaknesses. On the other hand, he lives by great values such as faith, love for a missionary vocation, joy in dedicating himself to another person, leaning on God and not on himself, openness to other people and to a new culture, perseverance, etc. These are not only qualities which characterize a missionary but also those that are necessary to be a witness of Christ. The article is not an in-depth analysis of the contribution of Polish SVD Missionaries in Ghana but the author hopes that it can inspire a solid study of the presence of Polish SVDs in Ghana – on the one hand, it could preserve the memory of those who sacrificed a lot for love for Ghanaians, and on the other hand encourage other people to share joyfully their faith in Christ.

Artykuł dotyczy polskich misjonarzy werbistów pracujących w Ghanie. Na podstawie ich życia i zaangażowania misyjnego autor chce uchwycić wyraźne cechy, które charakteryzują sylwetkę misjonarza nie tylko w opisywanym kraju. Autor opiera się przede wszystkim na osobistych relacjach werbistów żyjących w Ghanie, które ukazały się w większości w czasopiśmie „Misjonarz”. Już na podstawie tej powierzchownej analizy można zauważyć, że z jednej strony misjonarz jest zwyczajnym człowiekiem, który zmaga się nie tylko z trudnościami zewnętrznymi, ale też i własnymi ludzkimi słabościami. Z drugiej zaś strony żyje wartościami wielkimi, takimi jak wiara, umiłowanie powołania misyjnego, radość z poświęcenia się drugiemu człowiekowi, oparcie się na Bogu, a nie na sobie, otwartość na inną osobę i na nową kulturę, wytrwałość itp. Są to nie tylko cechy, które charakteryzują misjonarza, ale też takie, które trzeba posiadać, aby być świadkiem Chrystusa. Artykuł nie jest dogłębną analizą wkładu polskich werbistów w Ghanie, autor jednak wyraża nadzieję, że może on zainspirować do solidnego opracowania obecności polskich werbistów w Ghanie – mogłoby ono z jednej strony zachować pamięć o tych, którzy poświęcili wiele z miłości do Ghańczyków, z drugiej zaś zachęcić innych ludzi do radosnego dzielenia się wiarą w Chrystusa.

Autor podejmuje próbę rozwinięcia obrazu Kościoła jako matki. Jest to obraz bardzo pierwotny, który był już obecny w nauczaniu wczesnych Ojców Kościoła. We współczesnej teologii został on ponownie odkryty i jest wyraźnie obecny w nauczaniu papieża Franciszka. Autor nie twierdzi, że obraz ten wyczerpuje złożoną rzeczywistość Kościoła w całej jej pełni. Może być jednak bardzo ubogacający i może pomóc zrozumieć Kościół nie jako skostniałą czy tylko instytucjonalną strukturę, ale raczej jako żywą rzeczywistość o rysach matki. Autor wymienia więc elementy, w których Kościół jest matką; rodząc nowych wiernych przez sakrament chrztu, karmiąc ich i troszcząc się o nich przez inne sakramenty, zwłaszcza Eucharystię, ale także szukając i okazując opiekę tym, którzy znajdują się na peryferiach społeczeństwa i w trudnych sytuacjach życiowych. Powinno to również zainspirować nas do traktowania Kościoła z wielkim szacunkiem i głęboką miłością, tak jak dobre dziecko odnosi się do swojej matki. Na końcu artykułu znajduje się kilka akapitów poświęconych rozumieniu macierzyństwa w kontekście Melanezji. Celem niniejszego tekstu jest próba podkreślenia, że macierzyństwo Kościoła może być jasno zrozumiane i może inspirować również mieszkańców Papui-Nowej Gwinei, gdzie obecnie autor mieszka. Jednak temat ten potrzebuje dalszego badania i głębszego opracowania.

The author attempts to elaborate on the image of the Church as a mother. It is a very ancient image that was already present in the teaching of the early Fathers of the Church. In recent theology it has been rediscovered and is significantly present in the teaching of Pope Francis. The author does not claim that the image exhausts the complex reality of the Church in its fullness. However, it can be very enriching and can help to understand the Church not as a stagnant or only institutional structure, but rather as a living reality with the characteristics of a mother. The author presents the principal elements in which the Church appears to be a mother; giving birth through the sacrament of Baptism, nourishing and caring for the faithful through the other sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and also seeking and showing care for those who are in marginalized and difficult life situations. This should also inspire us to treat the Church with great respect and deep love, as a good child relates to her or his mother. At the end of the article, there are some paragraphs dedicated to understanding of a motherhood in the context of Melanesia. The purpose of this inclusion is an attempt to emphasize that the motherhood of the Church can be clearly understood and inspire also the people in Papua New Guinea, where the author currently lives. W artykule na temat przywództwa religijnego autor stara się przedstawić przywódcę jako osobę, która buduje relacje; najpierw swoje własne z innymi ludźmi, a następnie motywuje współbraćmi swojej wspólnoty do budowania, uzdrawiania, pogłębiania, rozwijania lub przywracania relacji między nimi. Nie oznacza to, że inne aspekty bycia przywódcą jako animatorem, koordynatorem i administratorem są mniej ważne. Jednak autor pragnie podkreślić, że wszystko powinno być robione w duchu kształtowania konstruktywnych relacji między członkami wspólnoty. Aby uzasadnić swoją teoretyczną argumentację, autor odwołuje się do osobistego doświadczenia – przywódcy kilku wspólnot. Głównym elementem, który stara się wyeksponować jest przekonanie, że budowanie zdrowych relacji z innymi i postępowanie – we wspólnocie – drogą zbawienia ma pierwszorzędne znaczenie w tworzeniu trwałych i wspólnototwórczych więzi. W rzeczywistości, prawdziwa wspólnota religijna powinna dać przedsmak wiecznej komunii z Bogiem i całym stworzeniem, której pragniemy i za którą tęsknimy (Rz 8,22).

In the article on the religious leadership, the author aims at presenting a leader as a person who constructs relationships; at first his own with other people and secondly motivates to construct, heal, deepen, develop or reestablish the relations among the confreres of his community. That is not to say that the other aspects of being a leader as an animator, a coordinator and an administrator are less important. Yet, the author wishes to emphasize that everything should be done in the spirit of forming the constructive relations between the members of the community. The author refers to his personal experiences as a leader of a few communities in order to exemplify his theoretical argumentation. The main point that he tries to enforce is that building our healthy relations with others and being helpful on the way of salvation is of primary importance in our life together. In fact, the true religious community should give the pre-taste of the eternal communion with God and with the entire creation for which we are impatiently longing for (Rm 8:22).
