Abstract: The "Humanae Vitae" Encyclical lists abortion among illicit means of regulating birth. Since 1993 abortion has been legal in Poland only in three instances: when the pregnancy is a result of criminal offense, when it poses risk to the life and health of the mother and when there is high probability of fetal defects. Public opinion polls conducted since the 1990s show that while Poles are against abortion „on demand” (and against using abortion as a method of regulating birth), they are inclined to accept abortion in the cases in which it is permitted by law (especially when the pregnancy results from a criminal act or when it poses a risk to the life or health of the mother).

Streszczenie: Encyklika Humanae vitae wśród niedozwolonych form ograniczania liczby potomstwa wymienia m. in. aborcję. Od 1993 roku w Polsce aborcja jest legalna wyłącznie w 3 sytuacjach: ciąży będącej wynikiem czynu zabronionego, zagrożenia życia i/lub zdrowia matki, dużego prawdopodobieństwa wady/choroby płodu. Badania opinii publicznej (od lat dziewięćdziesiątych do chwili obecnej) pokazują, że o ile Polacy przeciwni są powszechnej dostępności aborcji (traktowania jej jako narzędzia kształtowania liczby potomstwa), o tyle skłonni są akceptować aborcję w sytuacjach dopuszczanych przez prawo (zwłaszcza w przypadku czynu zabronionego i zagrożenia życia/zdrowia matki).

The encyclical Evangelium Vitae underlines the importance of family policy inthe context of – among others – demographics. The demographic situation of Poland is particularly unfavourable (in the 21st century TFR fl uctuated between 1,2 and 1,4). After 1989 no coherent, well-planned family policy was developed in Poland, and it was only in the last decade when some positive changes started to occur. Changes in the legislation regarding maternity leaves and childcare and the introduction of the new “Family 500+” benefi t in 2016 can be listed among promising solutions. One can already note the positive eff ects of some of these changes, such as the increased number of births.

The paper presented the attitude of Poles, recorded over the years, to four selected bioethical problems (abortion, in vitro fertilisation, contraception, euthanasia), to which the Catholic Church pays special attention in its teaching, and which are related to the beginning or end of human life. The paper first presented the attitude of general respondents to the above mentioned issues, and then respondents declaring regular religious practices. The observation of the opinion of the latter raises the question about the effectiveness of the message of the Church's teaching on the above mentioned bioethical issues.

W artykule został zaprezentowany zarejestrowany na przestrzeni lat stosunek Polaków do czterech wybranych problemów bioetycznych (aborcja, in vitro, antykoncepcja, eutanazja), na które w swoim nauczaniu szczególną uwagę zwraca Kościół katolicki, a które związane są z początkiem lub końcem życia ludzkiego. W pierwszej kolejności został zaprezentowany stosunek do wspomnianych kwestii ogółu respondentów, a następnie respondentów deklarujących regularne praktyki religijne. Analiza opinii tych ostatnich każe postawić pytanie o skuteczność przekazu nauczania Kościoła odnośnie do wspomnianych kwestii bioetycznych.

The article presents the attitudes of Poles towards abortion observed over time. The first part presents the notions of the general public, while the second focuses on the opinions of young people. For over two decades the acceptance of abortion was steadily becoming less and less common among Polish people. However, in 2016, when the issue of abortion became yet again the subject of legal, political and social debates, the percentage of Poles who oppose abortion started to decrease. Recently, young people display more liberal approaches towards the issue of abortion than the notions present in the general population. This correlates with the growing percentage of young people – especially women – who describe their political views as leftist. Subject scientific research: attitudes of Poles towards abortion; aim: presentation and analysis of changes of attitudes of Poles towards abortion; method: desk research.

W artykule zaprezentowano zarejestrowane na przestrzeni lat zmiany w podejściu Polaków do aborcji. W pierwszej części przedstawiono stosunek ogółu respondentów do tego zagadnienia, w drugiej skupiono się na opiniach ludzi młodych. Polacy przez ponad dwie dekady stawali się coraz mniej przychylni aborcji, jednakże od roku 2016, kiedy problem aborcji po raz kolejny stał się przedmiotem sporów prawnych, politycznych i społecznych, odsetek przeciwników aborcji zaczął powoli spadać. W ostatnim okresie młodzi ludzie podchodzą do problemu aborcji bardziej liberalnie niż ogół respondentów, równocześnie wzrósł wśród młodych ludzi – a w szczególności wśród kobiet – odsetek deklaracji poglądów lewicowych. Przedmiot badań naukowych: postawy Polaków wobec aborcji; cel: prezentacja i analiza przemian stosunku Polaków do aborcji; metoda: analiza danych zastanych.
