This article addresses the attitude of Różewicz and Herbert towards Beethoven’s music. The author of this paper refers to the following works: a story New School of Philosophy (PR I), an essay Painting by Night 21.01.85 (PR III), a text And Think That (ZF, P III), an article On Music and a Certain Interpreter (WG) and poems Beethoven (ROM) and A Mirror Wanders the Road (R). She gives gist of poetic polemics with some writings on Beethoven, Różewicz’s and Herbert’s attempt to question the myth of Beethoven, a significant evolution of the two poets’ attitude to the German composer and his works, as well as the reflection inspired by the artist’s tragic biography on the real meaning of his masterpieces and the consolatory power of art.

Tematem artykułu jest stosunek Tadeusza Różewicza i Zbigniewa Herberta do fenomenu muzyki Ludwiga van Beethovena. Autorka odnosi się kolejno do opowiadania Nowa szkoła filozoficzna (PR I), szkicu Malarstwo nocą 21.01.85 (PR III), utworu poetyckiego I pomyśleć (ZF, P III), artykułu Jeszcze o muzyce i pewnym interpretatorze (WG) oraz wierszy Beethoven (ROM) i Zwierciadło wędruje po gościńcu (R). Objaśnione zostają istota poetyckiej polemiki z piśmiennictwem beethovenowskim oraz próba kwestionowania przez Różewicza i Herberta mitu Ludwiga van Beethovena. Joanna Adamowska rekonstruuje znamienną ewolucję stosunku obydwu poetów do niemieckiego kompozytora i jego dzieł, a także zainspirowaną tragiczną biografią artysty refleksję poetów na temat rzeczywistego znaczenia arcydzieł oraz konsolacyjnych mocy sztuki.

The essay describes Zbigniew Herbert’s fascination with the biography and creative work of Georges Rouault. The author discusses the essayist texts on the French painter previously published by the poet in the press in the 1950s, as well as an early poem titled “Paysage légendaire” written in 1949, not published during the poet’s lifetime. The ekphrastic description of the elements characteristic for Rouault’s landscape painting presented in the Herbert’s poem is analyzed in the context of biblical symbolism. The author discovers the poet’s strategy of using the ambiguity of biblical symbols to build a poetic interpretation of Rouault’s oeuvre. The essay demonstrates the poet’s transposition of a painter’s sign onto a word, and it offers an insight into Herbert’s vision of the French artist in the changing context of contemporary religious art.

Artykuł traktuje o fascynacji Zbigniewa Herberta biografią i twórczością Georgesa Rouaulta. Autorka omawia teksty eseistyczne poświęcone francuskiemu malarzowi opublikowane przez Herberta w prasie w latach 50. XX wieku oraz pochodzący z 1949 roku wczesny wiersz Paysage légendaire, niedrukowany za życia poety. Ekfrastyczny opis elementów charakterystycznych dla malarstwa pejzażowego Rouaulta przedstawiony w wierszu Herberta zostaje przeanalizowany w kontekście symboliki biblijnej. Autorka odkrywa strategię poety polegającą na wyzyskaniu wieloznaczności biblijnych symboli w celu zbudowania poetyckiej interpretacji malarskiego oeuvre Rouaulta. Szkic ukazuje, w jaki sposób poeta dokonał transpozycji znaku malarskiego na słowo, a także przybliża Herbertowską wizję znaczenia twórczości francuskiego artysty na tle przemian współczesnej sztuki religijnej.
