The article analyses the structure and condition of land roads in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the end of the 15th to the 17th centuries. Various definitions of roads are discussed here. The author also addresses the problem of the quality of roads and improvements facilitating transport and communication in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The author focuses on the structure of roads in the Grand Duchy, which was analysed by looking at the example of Vilnius – the main political and economic centre in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

This article analyses the public road network of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th–17th centuries, discusses related historiography, and presents the up-to-date findings in the history of communication. The research also offers an analysis of special terms used in historical sources to denote roads and highways, presents the distribution of the public road network over the territory. The GDL towns best “enlaced” in the said network and the local as well as regional communication system were identified. Based on the empirical data, a special scheme map of all public roads in the GDL in the 16th–17th centuries was drawn and the list of public roads detected in historical sources, was presented.

Straipsnyje tiriama Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės vieškelių tinklo struktūra XVI–XVII a. Aptariama istoriografija ir pristatoma, kiek yra ištirta susisiekimo istorija. Analizuotos šaltiniuose užfiksuotos sąvokos, kuriomis įvardijami keliai ir vieškeliai. Nagrinėtas vieškelių tinklo išdėstymas teritorijoje. Nusakyti LDK miestai, labiausiai „apraizgyti“ vieškelių ir geriausiai įjungti į lokalinę bei regioninę susisiekimo sistemą. Remiantis empiriniais duomenimis, nubraižyta XVI–XVII a. LDK vieškelių tinklo kartoschema ir pateiktas šaltiniuose fiksuotų vieškelių sąrašas.
