The main purpose of the article is to analyse the role that urban green areas can play in the sustainable urban development. The article describes urban green areas in Nowa Huta, their system and functions, which allowed for the diagnosis of the role they fulfil today and which they can potentially fulfil. In addition, thanks to the analysis of aspects connected with urban green areas in the Study of the Conditions and Directions of the Spatial Management and Local Spatial Management Plans, it was possible to present how spatial planning, as one of the tools of urban development management, can influence the role of urban green areas.

Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza roli, jaką mogą odgrywać tereny zieleni miejskiej w zrównoważonym rozwoju miasta. W artykule opisane zostały tereny zieleni miejskiej w Nowej Hucie, ich system oraz funkcje, co pozwoliło na diagnozę roli, jaką odgrywają obecnie oraz jaką mogą odegrać potencjalnie. Dzięki analizie aspektów dotyczących zieleni miejskiej w Studium uwarunkowań i kierunków zagospodarowania przestrzennego oraz w miejscowych planach zagospodarowania przestrzennego możliwe było również zaprezentowanie, w jaki sposób planowanie przestrzenne, jako jedno z narzędzi zarządzania rozwojem miejskim, może wpływać na rolę terenów zieleni miejskiej.

This article is an attempt to answer the question: how one selects a neighbourhood to develop an innovation district, using the case of Cracow. This article mainly refers to the issue of the shape of innovation districts, showing how much the morphology of such spaces and their functions can promote or limit the development of innovative enterprises from the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) industry. It also refers to our research carried out with quantitative and qualitative methods in Poland, using two locations in Cracow as a case study. In this paper, we focus on the significant restrictions which hinder the emergence and development of such districts. We also indicate the potential solutions to these difficulties such as the temporary spaces of events we mapped and which we called ‘totemic spaces’.
