The territory position of present Slovakia in Central Europe predestined its rich history and rolein the various historical periods, as well as at present. This area has always represented some interface between power interests, we can say a buffer zone, in which important historical eventstook place. The territory of western Slovakia had a particular strategic importance it had legal, as that part of Hungary which bordered with the Moravian area. The pre-eminent importance ofthe territory of Western Slovakia, especially of Záhorie region, indicate not only the numerous matches to take control of its territory, but also an effort of monarchs and nobility to conquerits fortifications in the form of a system of frontier medieval castles within the Kingdom of Hungary. In the presented study, we focus our attention on the western border of the Hungarian Kingdom, namely Záhorský district which represented an administrative organizational borderin the early modern era. In that period this district was also the state border with the Kingdomof Hungary and the Archduchy of Austria and Moravian Margraviate.

The aim of the article is to characterize the church administration of the south-western part of Slovakia, the so called Podhorský deanery in the early modern era. The church administration has been documented on the basis of the analysis of canonical visitations which provide an authentic image of the social-political and religious situation in the region from the 1560s to the 1650s. According to the visitations from 1560 – 1564, a lot of presbyteries had either no priest or they had one who violated the church discipline. Situation in the church organization of the studied area changed in the first half of the 17th century. Visitations inform us not only about Roman Catholic parishes but also about conditions in the former Roman Catholic, yet at the time of visitations, Protestant or Anabaptist settlements. On the basis of the studied material, we came to the conclusion that changes in the church administration occurred on the arch deanery level, but mostly on the level of deaneries, which means that – in comparison with the past - in the chosen time was a deanery formed by different parishes and filial churches. Reformation and subsequent – though not very fast – establishment of the chain of Protestant and Calvin parishes also influenced the former Roman Catholic Church administration.

In the first half of the 19th century a law of 1806 was still in force in the field of education in Hungary. This law defined the organisation and content of education and was based on the school reforms of Empress Maria Theresa (1740–1780). The state had strengthened its influence on education and adapted it to the changing needs of economic and social life. The political freedom of the Slovak nation, including its language and education system, naturally became a focus for Ľudovít Štúr, who at that time was a key representative of Slovak national life and a leading personality of the Slovak national revival, as well as his collaborators, who in Slovak history were called “Štúr´s followers”. But the Štúr generation did not wait for the state and the law to solve the school issue, but actively contributed to the building of Slovak education by the establishment of Sunday schools, libraries and reading societies. The introduction of Hungarian language as a teaching language in Slovak national schools, however, became a new factor in Hungarian school policy.

The establishment of pre-primary educational institutions, brought recognition to pre-schools in most countries as the most appropriate place for the preparation of a child for life and school. From the beginning of institutional or private efforts to educate young children in theory and practical subjects, there were efforts to conceive pre-school educational institutions on the principles of holistic development with a deep understanding of the world of children and their psyche, as well as to prepare suitable teachers for these children. The existence of a pre-school in Trnava, demonstrates that this was in place from the start of the 19th century, and especially in activities of teacher Anthony Rehlingen.
