The article deals with persuasive and rhetorical devices that can be found in tabloid headlines, used to arouse reader’s interest, such as: specific typography styles, irony, parody, euphemisms, lexical suggestions, allusions, presupposition, peculiar expressiveness. Thanks to these devices the newspaper seems more personalized, addressed directly to its reader. Furthermore, these devices create the image of the readers as a group with strictly defined allies and foes. Content analysis of the headlines leads to the conclusion that tabloids create a specific, simplified and axiologically incoherent image of the world, consistent with stereotypes and fully suitable for mass reader.

The article poses the problem of the sense of including words characteristic of science fiction in Polish language dictionaries. It characterizes the vocabulary (based on Juliusz Braun’s novel „When the Moon Dies”), and finally considers the possibility of creating a separate dictionary collecting lexis of this kind.

In the article, the author analyses 19 feature movies and TV series produced from 1996 to 2010 by Russians and dedicated to Chechnya. The main observation is that during that time the approach to this particular subject was changing. The movies made in the years 1996-98, right after the Russian army had lost the socalled First Chechen War, propagated pacifistic ideas or suggested messianic explanation of those events. However, the movies made during the Second Chechen War (1999-2006) were dominated by praise for the Russian soldier as a defender of true Russian national and orthodox traditions. A picture of the enemy changed as well: no longer was it a Chechen, but an international Muslim terrorist. Finally, after 2006, Russian film industry started creating more profound, realistic movies, some of which focused on more universal moral problems.

In this article, the author compares rank-ordered lists of nouns derived from three text corpora: from YA weekly Płomyk (Flame; six issues from the mid-1930s), from Świat Młodych (Youth’s World; six issues from the mid-1970s) and from modern YA magazines such as Bravo or Popcorn. Analysing these lists, one comes to a conclusion that, taking into consideration the main themes as well as presented values, family model and life ideals, a periodical from the mid-1970s is more similar to prewar Płomyk than to contemporary magazines for teenagers. Given this, the author states that educational strategies in the Communist and prewar times were much alike, whereas the strategies characteristic for the present era are totally different. The accuracy of this hypothesis should be verified in a more detailed research.

The article discusses a classic horror story from 1839. It presents those elements of the novel typical of Romanticism, as well as the ones with which Tolstoy exceeded his era. The Polish translation of the piece, published for the first time in 1975, as well as four film adaptations of Tolstoy’s story were analyzed, trying to show how film directors interpreted its universal and timeless themes.
