The article contains the results of the analysis performed on the trends in the development of wage spreads in Poland. The analysis covers 25-year period commenced in 1991 by transforming changes in the mechanisms of the functioning of the national economy. It used a vast but imperfect empirical material derived from the CSO reporting. The article points to the basic methodological assumptions underlying the national statistics as one of the causes of the lack of a full and objective picture of vertical pay differentials.

Artykuł zawiera wyniki analizy tendencji w kształtowaniu się rozpiętości płacowych w Polsce. Obejmuje ona 25-letni okres zapoczątkowany w 1991 r. przełomowymi zmianami w mechanizmach funkcjonowania narodowej ekonomii. Wykorzystano w nim bogaty, ale niedoskonały materiał empiryczny pochodzący ze sprawozdawczości GUS. W artykule wskazano na podstawowe założenia metodyczne leżące u podstaw statystyki narodowej jako jedno ze źródeł braku pełnego i obiektywnego obrazu pionowych zróżnicowań płac.

The decreasing number of companies who reveal their remuneration data proves that companies tend to be more and more secretive about those issues. The data concerning salaries published by the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) are not presented according to the size of companies. This makes the salary rankings more interesting because they allow us to monitor changes in salary levels according to the size of companies. The article analyzes changes in salary levels in companies included in the 'TOP 500' ranking according to different criteria. It points to a worryingly low level of correlation between the level of salaries and financial results of companies.
