Purpose – The goal of this article is to present results of the research conducted among the students of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin with regard to factors stimulating their entrepreneurship or constituting a barrier in that area. The research covered one of the dimensions of entrepreneurship, i.e. the conducting of one’s own business.Design/Methodology/Approach – The following questions were asked as a part of the research procedure: 1) What is the entrepreneurial activity level of the MCSU students? 2) What factors motivate them to start their businesses?3) What factors discourage them from managing their firms? The sample-based study method was applied; because of that, it was necessary to get the empirical material from individuals belonging to a representative research sample. Students from all MCSU departments participated in the research. Data were collected in 2014–2016 with the use of a categorized interview questionnaire on 1,219 respondents selected at random. Thanks to the information contained in the metrics, it was possible to divide participants in the research on the basis of the following criteria: sex, study degree, field of studies, degree of financial dependency on third parties, business experience of parents or caretakers. The statistical materiality of differences in participants’ declarations was determined with the use of the chi-square test and derivative measures such as V-Cramer, T-Czuprow or Yule coefficients. An analysis of the structural similarity index had a supporting significance in that area. Findings – Levels of entrepreneurial activity among the MCSU students were analysed. Factors stimulating and discouraging them from being entrepreneurs were identified. Materiality of these factors was also determined for the entire research sample and for distinguished groups of respondents. The dependence of the entrepreneurship levels among students on their participation in individual groups was analysed. Practical implications – Results obtained in this manner and conclusions drawn from this research will allow one to work out an end-to-end program of academic entrepreneurship development aimed at the development of entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviours among students and graduates as well as the promotion of entrepreneurial culture in academic circles.  Original value – The originality of the analysis results from the specific nature of the research conducted. It was the first time when the entrepreneurship research covered students of all MCSU faculties. The exploration took place in groups distinguished from the research sample, which allowed for a greater integrity of analyses. The obtained results constitute a stimulus to continue the research with the use of focus groups. The final goal of the research will consist of an original training curriculum relating to academic entrepreneurship. Article type – Research paper.

Purpose – the purpose of the article is to diagnose determinants of the effective development of entrepreneurial competence in members of the MCSU academic community and to develop a concept of a tool used for that purpose.Design/Methodology/Approach – Polish and foreign literature was researched to find answers to the following questions:1) What requirements are imposed on universities with regard to the development of entrepreneurial competence among students?2) How should the effective education of adults be guaranteed?3) What are the methodological bases for the realization of focus group interviews?After that, focus research was carried out among 43 students from 11 faculties of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin to learn their opinions about:• The way the essence of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviour are perceived,• conditions created by the University for entrepreneurial education and for the development of entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviours,• factors that stimulate or block their entrepreneurship,• preferred methods of development of entrepreneurial competences. The obtained results of literature studies and focus interviews were used in order to develop the concept of an Entrepreneurship Academy or a complex program for the development of entrepreneurship in the academic community at the University.Findings – entrepreneurial competences are among the ones of key importance for the successful functioning of people in the society as well as in their personal and professional lives. There is an urgent need to develop them and universities play an important role in satisfying it. To guarantee the best effectiveness of didactic processes focusing on the development of the knowledge of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviour to members of the academic community, education curriculums should be developed considering the needs and preferences of the interested parties. Education methods based on learning in action and through experience should also be used.Practical implications – the developed concept of the MCSU Entrepreneurship Academy is comprehensive and flexible. It is possible to be implemented in any school of higher education in full or in the form of its selected modules depending on the identified needs of the interested parties and financial resources available.Original value – schools of higher education have varied curriculums related to entrepreneurship, however, the MCSU Entrepreneurship Academy is an end-to-end tool based on the holistic approach and involving the cooperation of entities representing all components of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the socioeconomic vicinity.Article type – research paper, case study.

The presented article aims to identify the degree of adaptation of the competencies of graduates of economic studies to the requirements and realities of the modern labour market, and is divided into three research areas. The first area includes an analysis of job advertisements for the Lublin Voivodeship, leading to the identification of demand for positions in specific industries. The second area focuses on researching employers from the Lublin Voivodeship in order to identify the demand for competencies of job candidates. The third one concerns the competencies of graduates of the Faculty of Economics of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (abbreviated: FoE MCSU) and an analysis of their professional development following graduation. The study of the research showed the existence of competency gaps, mainly in terms of basic professional knowledge regarding the work performed, and professional experience, which can affect the competitiveness of graduates in the labour market. The competencies desired by employers were also identified, including basic professional knowledge related to the work performed, and skills related to decision making and problem solving. The research findings may contribute to improving educational programmes in economics.

Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest identyfikacja stopnia dostosowania kompetencji absolwentów kierunków ekonomicznych do wymagań i realiów współczesnego rynku pracy. Badanie zostało podzielone na trzy obszary badawcze. Pierwszy z nich obejmował analizę ogłoszeń o pracy dla terenu województwa lubelskiego, prowadzącą do zidentyfikowania zapotrzebowania na stanowiska w konkretnych branżach. Drugi obszar koncentrował się na badaniu pracodawców z województwa lubelskiego w celu zidentyfikowania zapotrzebowania na kompetencje kandydatów do pracy. Trzeci obszar dotyczył kompetencji absolwentów Wydziału Ekonomicznego Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej. Analiza wyników przeprowadzonych badań wykazała istnienie luk kompetencyjnych, głównie w zakresie podstawowej wiedzy profesjonalnej dotyczącej wykonywanej pracy oraz doświadczenia zawodowego, które mogą wpływać na konkurencyjność absolwentów na rynku pracy. Zidentyfikowano także kompetencje pożądane przez pracodawców obejmujące podstawową wiedzę profesjonalną związaną z wykonywaną pracą, umiejętność podejmowania decyzji oraz rozwiązywania problemów. Ustalenia badawcze mogą przyczynić się do doskonalenia programów kształcenia na kierunkach ekonomicznych.
