The siege of Nicosia (1570) was but the first stage of the conflict known in history as the Fourth Ottoman-Venetian war. The article discusses the similarities and the differences in the way in which the event is shown in a little known Armenian thrênos entitled The Lament of the Island of Cyprus (1570) and in the major contemporary narratives, mostly Italian. The author of the poem was present on Cyprus during the initial stages of the conflict, and on the whole the poem is true to the historical facts, but its most obvious characteristic is its moralizing tone, which is also found in the Italian prose narratives of the siege.

For Queen Victoria and Prince Albert the proper education of their eldest son, and the future king of England, was of paramount importance. Their most important advisor in this matter was Baron Stockmar, who believed in strict control of every moment in the boy’s life. The article examines available documentary sources dealing with the theory of the prince’s education as presented mainly in Queen Victoria’s, Prince Albert’s and Stockmar’s memoirs, as well as the way this theory was translated into practice by the Prince’s tutors and teachers. The main documentary sources here are the official reports and private diaries of Lady Lyttelton, Henry Birch and Frederick Gibbs. All in all, to the great disappointment of the Prince’s parents, the educational theory promoted by Stockmar proved to be a complete failure.

Giovanni Della Casa (1505-1556), an archbishop and papal diplomat, was the author of a Latin treatise known as An uxor sit ducenda, which is widely regarded as undeniable evidence of Della Casa’s acrimonious misogyny. The present analysis of the work, based on recent research, offers at least a partial defence of Della Casa against this somewhat unjust perception. Della Casa’s misogyny is often a by-product of his misogamy. The treatise describes the challenging reality of life in arranged marriages, which were difficult for both men and women, and it criticizes the norms and conventions surrounding marriage among the upper social classes.  The treatise was, perhaps, a symbolic farewell to secular life before his embarking on a career in the Church.
