In this review Gorzkowska compares Jerzy Hoffman’s film adaptation of The Old Tale to the novel of the same title by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The text is a detailed analysis of similarities and differences between the film and the book. It evaluates the changes the director has introduced both in the plot as well as in the creation of the characters. Gorzkowska focusing on the basic components of the adaptation gives her opinion of the screenplay, cast and acting, setting, costumes, make-up and special effects. Finally she refers to the film’s and the novel’s message and presents the results of Hoffman’s omission of the patriotic aspects included in the original plot.
