The article presents a biography of Maria Margaretha Kirch née Winckelmann (1670–1720), the wife of astronomer Gottfried Kirch (1639–1710) and the mother of astronomer Christfried Kirch (1694–1740). The analysis of her astronomical observations is aimed at an attempt to understand the position of women in early modern astronomy, situated between the status of an assistant and the figure of an independent researcher.
