The captions under visual materials located in the press fit into a category, which, against the background of numerous works devoted to the variant of language used by the press, seems to be almost completely unnoticed by researchers of the language used in media. One can ask oneself at this point the question of whether this constitutes a wilful lack of attention by media linguists convinced of the sterility of captions as a potential area of study or is actually a result of a peculiar oversight. Based on the assumption that captions posted by media broadcasters under the photographs can comprise an interesting field of scientific exploration, an attempt will be made of their systematization. The captions coming from a total of six Polish-German newspapers will serve as the basis for the research material.

The purpose of this paper is to show the ways of using virtual space for autopresenting activities and identifying the mechanisms of creating an image in media mediated multimodal communi- cations based on their example. According to the assumption accepted, self-presentation actions have the character of a communication game in which at least one participant is trying to make the desired impression on others. A three layer model of analysis has been used to describe them, referring to Ludwig Wittgenstein’s concept of language games. After presenting the theoretical and methodological assumptions, an analysis of extracts of the contents of the o cial Facebook sites belonging to Angela Merkel was carried out.

Zawężony do komunikatów językowo-obrazowych materiał badawczy poddany został oglądowi o charakterze interdyscyplinarnym, integrującym koncepcje z zakresu psychologii społecznej, nauk o komunikowaniu, socjologii i mediolingwistyki porównawczej.

After presenting the theoretical and methodological assumptions, an analysis of extracts of the contents of the official Facebook sites belonging to Beata Szydło and Angela Merkel was carried out. The research material, narrowed down to linguistic and imaging messages, was subjected to a view that was of an interdisciplinary nature, integrating concepts from social psychology, communication sciences, sociology and comparative media linguistics.
