Стаття присвячена громадсько-політичній та культурно-організаційній діяльності одного з лідерів української міжвоєнної та повоєнної еміграції Никифора Григорієва у США та Канаді у 1938-1948 рр. Розгляд проблеми здійснено на основі неопублікованих матеріалів родинного архіву Григорієвих (м. Потомак, штат Меріленд, США), значна частина яких вперше вводиться до наукового обігу в даній публікації. Простежено основні напрямки діяльності Н. Григорієва в означений період: створення в США та Канаді української незалежноїлівоцентристської політичної сили; інформаційно-просвітницька робота, спрямована на формування позитивного іміджу українського національно-визвольного демократичного руху; заснування Українського науково-культурного осередку та видавнича робота. ДіяльністьН. Григорієва розглядається у контексті громадсько-політичного життя української діаспори та суспільно-політичних процесів у США та Канаді.

The article deals with the social and political, cultural and organizational activities of one of the leaders of the Ukrainian inter-war and post-war emigration Nykyfor Hryhoryiv in the USA and Canada in 1938-1948, based on unpublished materials of the Hryhoryiv`s family archive (Potomac,Maryland, USA). A significant part of this archive is introduced into scientific circulation at the first time in this publication. The main areas of activity of N. Hryhoryiv during this period are traced: the creation in the USA and Canada of a Ukrainian independent center-left political force; informational and educational work aimed at forming a positive image of the Ukrainian national liberation democratic movement; foundation of the Ukrainian scientific and cultural center and publishing activity. His activity is considered in the context of the socio-political life of the Ukrainian diaspora and the socio-political processes in the USA and Canada.

The article deals with the creation and activity of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America during the Cold War. It is the main organization of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States, which brings together more than 30 leading public, cultural, religious organizations. It represents the interests of the Ukrainian Diaspora of the United States and lobbies the interests of Ukraine in the US authorities and the world community. The author traced the historical preconditions and circumstances of the creation of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and concluded that the founding of the organization demonstrated a new qualitative stage in the development of the Ukrainian diaspora of the United States. Its institutional design was completed, and systemic integration into the social and political space of the United States was launched, including interaction with the highest state power. Attention is focused on determining the main activities of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and their implementation during the Cold War. Thus, one of the main tasks of the Committee was to protect the rights of the Ukrainian people to self -determination and democratic freedoms, including national self -expression, religious and political freedom, cultural development in Ukraine and abroad, in particular in the United States. The majority in the Ukrainian diaspora considered this mission the main thing of their lives. Therefore, this has become the most important unifying factor for various Ukrainian organizations and forces in the US around the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. During the second half of the 1940s-1991, the activity of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America was aimed at promoting the essence and tasks of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, exposing the USSR policy towards the Ukrainian people, protection of human rights and Ukrainian nation in the USSR, gaining support for the idea of independence of Ukraine. As well as the formation of a positive image of the Ukrainian nation in the United States and the international arena, preserving the national identity and culture of the Ukrainian people, the unification of the Ukrainian diaspora in America and the world. In fact, the UCCA appears as the first Ukrainian lobby in the US political party, which effectively defended the interests of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, and made a significant contribution to the proclamation and recognition of Ukraine's independence.

У статті розглянуто створення та діяльність у другій половині 1940-х – 1991 рр. Українського конгресового комітету Америки – центральної «парасолькової» організації української діаспори у США, що об’єднує понад 30 провідних українських громадських, культурних, релігійних організацій, представляє інтереси української діаспори Сполучених Штатів та лобіює інтереси України перед владою США і світовою спільнотою. Простеживши історичні передумови та обставини створення Українського конгресового комітету Америки, автор доходить висновку, що його заснування ознаменувало якісно новий етап у становленні української діаспори США: завершення її інституалізації та початок системної інтеграції в суспільно-політичний простір США, зокрема взаємодії з вищою державною владою. Увага акцентується на визначенні головних напрямків діяльності Українського конгресового комітету Америки та їх реалізації в роки «холодної війни». Так одним з основних завдань Комітету було визначено захист прав українського народу на самовизначення і демократичні свободи, серед яких національне самовиявлення, релігійну і політичну свободу, культурний розвиток в Україні та поза нею, зокрема у США. Саме ця місія, яку більшість української діаспори вважала головною справою свого життя, й стала найважливішим об’єднуючим чинником різних українських організацій та сил США навколо Українського конгресового комітету Америки. Протягом другої половини 1940-х – 1991 рр. діяльність Українського конгресового комітету Америки спрямовувалася на популяризацію суті та завдань українського національно-визвольного руху, викриття політики СРСР щодо українського народу, захист прав людини та української нації в СРСР, здобуття підтримки ідеї незалежності України, а також формування її позитивного іміджу у США та на міжнародній арені, збереження національної ідентичності й культури українського народу, об’єднання української діаспори в Америці та всьому світі. Фактично, УККА постає як перше українське лобі у політикумі США, що ефективно відстоювало інтереси України та українського народу, і зробило значний внесок у проголошення та визнання світом незалежності України.
