In 1955 the Soviet Union undertook an unprecedented campaign of verifying professional qualifications of art conservators. Art conservators were divided into four categories : the first, the second, the third and the fourth category. The verification was applied to conservators of paintings (easel-oil, distemper, glue and oil as well as wall-paintings), engravings, ceramics, glass, metal, textiles, ivory and horn, gilding, furniture, carvings and bass-reliefs, sculptures in stone and gypsum, and finally of library materials. In this way, the verification campaign covered practically all branches of museological, library and archival conservation and partially monument of architecture. The results of the verification of the qualifications of conservators carried out in the Soviet Union for more than twenty years have clearly pointed at the need and usefulness of such a campaign. It has also proved the necessity to increase professional skills and to expand professional knowledge of conservators. Besides, the campaign has brought about an improvement in the activities taken up in the field of the protection of treasures of art.
